The communities surrounding us play a crucial role in shaping our transitions from one stage of life to another. The study "Social Communities in Transitions: Young Danes’ Narratives on the Change and Maintenance of Social Communities" by Maria Bruselius-Jensen and Niels Ulrik S?rensen, explores how young people’s perceptions of social communities and their functions across different social contexts evolve during transitional periods. ?? The stage of life we are in, the maintenance and redefinition of our communities, and the effort required to sustain them are some of the key topics explored in this research. ?? ?? “…demonstrating the taken-for-grantedness that underpins infrastructural assets.” great phrasing here and a tasty introduction to the bigger piece of work. I love how the evolved use of key terms is dissected here, this nuance is critical to the policy cascade to follow in terms of placemaking, social value, cultural capital etc etc
Blog: New research at the Bennett Institute aims to define and measure the role and value of ‘social and cultural Infrastructure’ and develop a framework that helps understand their value and role in public life. Dimitrios Panayotopoulos-Tsiros and Steph Coulter discuss why this is important and how it impacts place-based decision-making. Read: https://lnkd.in/eYv-CtXE

One more time! Here is the promised link to the symposium on cultural complexity that was help on July 2. It is long so there are prompts for finding sessions, but I thought the first three presenters were amazing in how they responded to the papers that Anthony Lynch and Zoe Lambert wrote beforehand and tied them to other academic research and really explained so clearly the changing scene before us in our globalizing world. So may the seeds they spread here grow into new understandings and concepts for us all to keep working with in the various fields we represent and work in! https://lnkd.in/g8vW2mzk

Research for Action is committed to becoming a community-engaged research organization that truly values?all?forms of knowledge. In our "Insights Report," we emphasize the importance of moving beyond the traditional hierarchy of academic knowledge and recognizing the lived experiences of community members as vital expertise. One way RFA is putting this into practice is by building community advisory committees composed of community leaders, parents, and teachers/ former teachers. These committees ensure that community perspectives shape the research project overall, from design to dissemination. ??Curious about how RFA is centering community voices in their research? ?? I am excited to share that our article "Thinking alike, acting alike? An assessment of organizational homophily and paradigmatic pragmatism in networks for local integration policies" is published (open access!) in Comparative Migration Studies. Do local governments indirectly impose policy paradigms on the integration of immigrants through their grant regulations? How does the level of state intervention in the integration of immigrants relate to the prevailing policy paradigms? Do civil society organizations merely collaborate with others adhering to a similar policy paradigm on integration? Prof. dr. Stijn Oosterlynck and I answer these questions and more in our newest paper. Many thanks to KU Leuven Instituut voor de Overheid, CRESC and Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen (FWO) for supporting this research. Read the article here: Thinking alike, acting alike? Some really great insights about the central South in this New Local report. ?? 23 senior decision makers were interviewed, uncovering some interesting research gaps relating to: ? The identity of the region and pride in place ? Power structures, devolution, and community resilience ? Health inequalities ? Local skills and (future) labour needs ? Economy and placemaking ? Infrastructure (transport and housing) "Researchers should be empowered to analyse these gaps in understanding to develop creative and new approaches and solutions. Addressing these priorities presents a significant opportunity for researchers to develop multi-disciplinary teams, align existing research questions to providing substantial practical application and impact, and seek funding through innovative partnerships." The report also shows that "stakeholders were concerned about the how; how can stakeholders achieve their aims, and how can research help them do so? There is a clear need to align the intellectual capacity of local universities to some of the greatest social issues that the region faces." There's ample opportunity for researchers at the University of Southampton and our Civic Partners to engage with these regional challenges. The Centre for the South exists to facilitate this important work and to mobilise knowledge exchange in the central South – do get in touch if you'd like to join this effort.
To learn more about the research behind our six strategic priorities, we have a summary on our website below ? This report contains insights from leaders across many sectors in the central South, and is an interesting read for anyone invested in the wellbeing of the region, particularly policy researchers. It highlights key gaps in research which not only drive the projects we deliver, but act to guide policy research on how to form the best solutions for the area.
