??In Sacramento, CA, I had the honor of doing a program for the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH). Together we unpacked how to attract and retain diverse talent. Here are participant takeaways: ??Before you ask a person a question, ask if you can ask them. ??When you take an interest in a person, they’ll tell you what makes them unique in their time. ??Don't assume you know a person, learn about them by listening. ??You don’t need a lot of time to learn a person’s need but you do need to take your time and allow them to reveal their unique need(s) in their time. ??I love the bite-sized steps for entering into a conversation. The Three Horizons framework is typically used to think about the future. What is great about this version is that it recognizes the importance of how we go to this point. Many social issues have a deep embedded "memory" that they bring with them from past experiences - for example, trauma - and we need to first recognize this and work to address it before we can constructively move forwards.
