Schott’s latest report, “Justice Is The Foundation,” unveils a stark trend: racial equity and racial justice grantmaking dropped significantly between 2018 and 2021, in the moment when the call for funding was greatest and most urgent. At Schott, we’re focused on what we and fellow grantmakers can do to turn the tide. Schott’s President and CEO, Dr. John H. Jackson, and Nicole Rodriguez Leach, Executive Director of Grantmakers for Education, have joined forces to address this issue and outline action items for funders in a new article for the Stanford Social Innovation Review. How Funders Can Take The Next Step: ??Transform analysis.?Use the dual lenses of racial equity and justice to critically examine grantmaking portfolios. ??Transform grantmaking strategy.?Increase the number of racial justice grants in your portfolio, and commit to longer-term grant cycles to better accommodate the true pace of systemic change. ??Transform organizational practices.?Hire staff with direct experience in racial equity and justice work and empower them to act. Convene informed community advisors as a pole of grassroots voice within the organization that you can rely on through changes in strategic plans, board and staff education, and self-evaluation. #FeatureFriday Like so many urban areas across the country, initiatives abound, yet there are significant challenges of alignment, impact, integration, and sustainability. The variety of programming necessary to keep students engaged has not been as robust as needed, especially at schools where the academic achievement on standardized assessments is so low. Conspicuously absent from school programming are on-site primary health and mental health services, parent engagement, and access to social services. Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis and its community partners contacted TCG to apply for a federal grant to implement the Full-Service Community Schools project with three schools near the Eastside neighborhood in Indianapolis. The proposed project would provide a comprehensive, high-quality school-community partnership with various services promoting parent involvement, academic achievement, health, and wellness. https://hubs.ly/Q02gbhRs0

I can't recommend this article strongly enough. "A Democratic Vision for Public Schools" by Kent McGuire and Matt Wilka. The authors help us to understand how our political-economic paradigms throughout the history of the United States have shaped our public education system. What I found most wonderful is their hopeful vision for what's possible. To quote the authors, "Public schools that foster an appreciation for history and the skills and dispositions for citizenship must be part of the long-term solution to the democratic challenges that we face today." I really appreciate this framework and the role it plays in our work at Barr - AND I keep thinking about how helpful it would have been in my previous roles. When you work in advocacy, you have to choose what you will focus on at any given moment. By laying out a comprehensive framework, the Indicators of School Quality can help advocates pinpoint how the issues they are tackling connect with others, and what else needs to move to drive impact for young people.

"The rate of residents with some form of college education increased to 62.9% in 2022, up from 60.5% of residents in 2021," However, the data is a mixed bag, differing for Colorado high school graduates and students of color—compared to those who moved to the state with higher levels of education. I’m thrilled to share some exciting news from the Student Basic Needs Coalition! We’ve just received a $100,000 grant from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, which will allow us to expand our peer navigator program to even more community colleges. As many of you know, community colleges serve as a critical entry point for students from diverse and often underserved backgrounds. Yet, despite their eligibility, too many students still miss out on the SNAP benefits they need to succeed. This SNAP gap has real consequences, from increased stress to higher dropout rates. This grant is a game-changer for us. It means we can train and support more peer navigators—students who have personally navigated the SNAP process—to help their peers access these essential benefits. We’re also creating a new full-time Campus Program Manager role to coordinate these efforts across multiple campuses, ensuring we reach as many students as possible. I’m incredibly grateful to the Annie E. Casey Foundation for recognizing the importance of this work. This grant represents a significant step forward in our mission to make college more accessible and equitable for all students. The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) recently announced the launch of two grant opportunities: Barrier Removal – Growing Institutional Capacity Grants and the Reconnect Community Action Grants, which offer public and tribal colleges fund to grow college enrollment, strengthen institutional systems to eliminate barriers — such as housing, transportation and child care — and support adults as they earn a skill certificate or degree. “Food and housing insecurity are all too common among Michigan’s college students, and non-tuition costs like transportation and child care present additional financial hurdles. Michigan College Access Network is excited for MiLEAP to make these grants available to Michigan's public and tribal colleges to help address these needs," said Ryan Fewins-Bliss, executive director of MCAN. "This funding will support increased access to postsecondary opportunities for students who need it most, including low-income students, students of color and first-generation college-going students. These grants will help our institutions address systemic inequities head-on, empowering students to succeed and strengthening communities in Michigan for generations to come." Happy Belated School Governor Awareness Day! Only a year on, it's nothing short of phenomenal to see the numbers coming out of our STEM Governance programme and the stories of how colleagues are impacting their communities to leave a STEM legacy. But how many young people do we really need to engage with before they make the decisions that will bring them into the sector? The answer is many multiples of 72,000. Whilst we are incredibly proud to be the industry thought leaders for STEM Governance, we also know that to make our sector fit for the future and attractive to young people, that the education system must be as progressive as the rate of technological change we see in industry. Closing that gap requires a lot more momentum, visibility of relevant STEM careers and a joined up, strategic approach - than we as an industry are capable of right now. That's why in partnership with Network Rail and Heathrow and many other organisations across the STEM sector, we are sharing this blueprint to demonstrate that a scientific approach to engagement with the next generation must be the way it works.
