Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, the holiday dedicated to the end of slavery and the liberation, culture, and freedom of African Americans in United States history. Black entrepreneurs, distillers, mixologists, and innovators have made rippling impacts on the beverage industry for as long as we've known, and commemorating their legacy is especially important for today's holiday. Black women have been killing it in the kitchen since the beginning of time. Despite this fact, Black people — specifically Black women — have been underrepresented in the #culinary industry for decades. Although the number of Black chefs is increasing, there’s still plenty of progress to be made in giving us the recognition that we deserve. And with the new generation of Black foodies across the country looking to feed their culinary palates, there are several who are giving the people what they need — in the best way possible. Yes! Welcome to the Decade of Black Innovation! This is a BEAUTIFUL excerpt from Jessica Norwood's book: Believe-in-You Money: What Would it Look like if the Economy Loved Black People: "Believe-In-You Money is community-centred, rooted in storytelling and rituals of care and kinship. This money is drawn to the power of the people. This money makes you feel good. This money makes you feel seen. This money finds joy in the success of others. This money sees our shared humanity. This kind of money is an energy - Ase of life itself- and has been moving between peoples for a millennium". This is what we witnessed this week. Our members pooled their registration dollars together from this year's Black Innovation Alliance's 3rd Annual Sustainability Summit backed by a 1:1 match from UBS to invest in ensuring that Black entrepreneurs feel seen, share joy, share their deepest stories, and in many ways humanize capital by distributing Belief Capital. This is more than just money. It's power. It's energy. It's Belief. It's what Black entrepreneurs deserve and so much more. Are tacos and burritos sandwiches? A judge in Indiana thinks so. The ruling stems from a 2022 legal battle. Martin Quintana, a Mexican immigrant, wanted to open "The Famous Taco Mexican Grill" in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Allen County Planning Commission rejected his plans. The commission cited an agreement limiting the location to "made-to-order or subway-style sandwiches." Quintana argued that tacos fit this definition. After over two years of legal battles, Judge Craig Bobay ruled that tacos and burritos are Mexican-style sandwiches, allowing Quintana to proceed with his plans to open his taquería ????
