For me, this is one of the greatest examples we can use to demonstrate we live in a completely failed society. Completely. Failed. Society. While politicians continue to invest our shared resources (taxes) - millions and sometimes billions of dollars worth of subsidies and grant funding - in extractive projects like mines, logging, destructive large scale energy projects, and submarines, our ecosystems, and people in need continue to be torn apart by an indifferent system of governance, supported by elected officials and big business. Can anyone find a similar example of “Women sleeping in cars” from any Indigenous society in any timeline of humanity? Only in deeply sick societies are women this neglected, afraid and abused. Another example comes to mind - the Industrial Revolution in the Victorian era in Great Britain, where poor women and children were factory fodder. All born from the same patriarchal, hierarchical power structures and destructive bullshit.

Happy International Women’s Day! This #WomensHistoryMonth, I’m reading the international best seller “Invisible Women” by Caroline Criado Perez. It’s a fascinating study highlighting the connection between the lack of female representation in data leading to less than optimal conditions for women day after day. Everything from snow removal patterns preventing women from effectively navigating their unpaid, caretaking work and their paid jobs to ill fitting life-saving workplace safety equipment that creates a hazard rather than protect women. An SHRM article had this little gem: "A separate report showed that women reported experiencing more incivility from other women at work than from their male colleagues. Women who were targeted by female colleagues often reported: Being addressed in unprofessional terms. Having derogatory comments directed toward them. Being put down in a condescending way. Being ignored or excluded from professional camaraderie. (I will add talking behind your back) Please know absolutely: The people who do this are insecure. They don't have enough confidence in themselves and delight in tearing other people town to make themselves feel good or more successful. What they are is completely pathetic. For those women who do not play well in the sandbox I will quote Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on the advent of Hilary Clinton's presidential campaign: “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other...I so firmly believe that, even today, women have an obligation to help one another. In a society where women often feel pressured to tear one another down, our saving grace lies in our willingness to lift one another up. And while young women may not want to hear anything more from this aging feminist, I feel it is important to speak to women coming of age at a time when a viable female presidential candidate, once inconceivable, is a reality." Speaking as another aging #feminist, I will tell you when my daughters were teens, I heard so much about Mean Girls. "Don't be the mean girl," I said.
