One of Rotary’s 7 core focuses is the ‘environment’, so we jumped at the opportunity to take part in the Treekly challenge, whose purpose is to plant trees to combat some of the excesses of climate change. In the context of this particular Rotary challenge, mangrove trees will be planted on the Kenyan coast near Mombasa. They are well known for their ability to absorb CO2 and improve general biodiversity. The challenge ran for the whole month of March and required each team member to walk a minimum of 5,000 steps a day. Our Leicester Club entered four teams of five, which were known severally as Leicester Tigers, Team Amazon, Walk with Hope and Walk with Impact. The first of these consisted of Barry Davies, Ed Cufflin, Richard Power, Chris Saul and me. The other three all came from our Impact Group and were helpfully coordinated by Diana Esho. In the event, all our Leicester Tigers team completed the minimum of 5,000 steps for every day in March and thereby guaranteed the planting of 155 mangroves, to which another 50 tees were added as part and parcel of our entry fee. So we achieved a maximum of 205 trees, and it is felt that the other three Impact teams more or less did the same. It is therefore a safe bet that our wider Club will have guaranteed the planting of over 800 trees! Our Leicester Tigers team currently believes it is in second place overall out of the 22 teams that signed up for the challenge. First place is likely to go to Chichele Conservationists, who together have completed just under 3 million steps, which comfortably beat our circa 2.2 million ( an average of 14,000+ per day) steps and thereby secure first prize. It would be fair to report that much fun was had along the way; that friendly banter ensued; and that we are each slightly fitter. ?? On this #WorldEnvironmentDay, we celebrate a decade of #rewilding in the Southern Carpathians with news of the arrival of two new bison herds in Romania! ???? Bison reintroduction efforts in the Southern Carpathians began 10 years ago. Between 2014 and 2023, Rewilding Europe and WWF-Romania translocated 99 European bison to the ?arcu Mountains – a part of the Southern Carpathians rewilding landscape where no wild bison had roamed free for at least 250 years. With the population in the landscape now thriving, it currently comprises at least 190 individuals, including the newly arrived groups of #EuropeanBison totalling 14 animals. The two new bison groups represent the first release carried out under the LIFE with Bison initiative, which is taking bison rewilding efforts in the Southern Carpathians to the next level with support from the EU's LIFE Programme. Together, Rewilding Romania, WWF-Romania, and a range of partners including local municipalities will ensure that the growing European bison population and people who live in the landscape can live alongside each other in a balanced and positive way, and that local communities continue to benefit financially from the return of this iconic species, through the area’s burgeoning nature-based economy. Discover more ?? https://loom.ly/nFp7zwA Rewilding Europe is providing co-funding, thanks to financial support from a range of partners, including Cartier for Nature, Fondation Ensemble, The Ecological Restoration Fund, the Nationale Postcode Loterij, Wereld Natuur Fonds (WWF-NL), and Arcadia. The support of these partners plays a critical role in enabling us to deliver and scale up rewilding impact.

A new venison subsidy for Scotland? ?? Scottish venison is one of the most valuable products to come from our hills and forests.?It's a sustainable and healthy food that has been part of our diet forever. But prices for venison are low. There is little incentive or support for land managers to sell this fantastic product to commercial markets. A new subsidy could be the answer. A relatively small investment from the Scottish Government could support the deer management that we know is needed to allow Scotland's woodlands and peatlands to regenerate. It could also help create a sustainable venison market that Scotland can be proud of for years to come. As a member of the collaborative #CommonGroundForum we're calling on the government to back this proposal. More in the blog below. https://lnkd.in/ePp5ceiy

?? With a blow to the ?? in the US, We have a Landmark Conservation Victory in the UK: The Rothbury Estate Acquisition ?? I want to celebrate the great projects and successes for the environment ?? ?? Even with another anti-climate politician on the horizon, we can still create a world that is fair, healthy and sustainable, for all. Amidst global environmental challenges, the UK celebrated a significant win for nature last month! The Wildlife Trusts and Northumberland Wildlife Trust have acquired part of the 3,800-hectare (9,400-acre) Rothbury Estate in Northumberland, marking England's largest single land purchase for conservation in 30 years! Key highlights: ? Historic estate: In the Percy family for 700 years ? Includes 12 farms and 23 residential properties ? First phase: Includes Simonside Hills and western parts ? Ambitious goal: £30 million appeal to secure the entire estate within 2 years ? Transformative plans: End hunting, promote regenerative farming ? Note - The Wildlife Trusts have already raised £5.75m "through the donations of a few generous individuals". ?? Why this matters: 1. Biodiversity boost: Home to endangered species like merlin, cuckoo, and red squirrels 2. Climate action: Opportunity for peatland restoration and native woodland planting 3. Community involvement: Aims to work with local people and maintain public access 4. Sustainable agriculture: Showcasing how farming and nature conservation can coexist This acquisition represents a pivotal moment in UK conservation efforts, demonstrating how collective action can lead to significant environmental wins. It's a testament to the power of collaboration between organizations, donors, and communities. In a storm of bad news, I hope this gives you the positive you needed today. Yesterday many big garden centres (including B&Q) teamed up with environmental charities, nursery owners and growers to ask Keir Starmer to put an end to peat sales as soon as possible ?? The Peat-free partnership included signatures from: - Chris Packham - Alys Fowler - B&Q - The Co-op - Dave Goulson - Guy Shrubsole - Plantlife - Buglife - The National Trust - Soil Association Plus many more! The Peat-free Partnership?is funded by Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and hosted by the wild plant conservation charity Plantlife. Why do our peatlands need protecting? - These wetland habitats make up around 12% of the UK land area - They support amazing biodiversity - They help tackle climate change due to their ability to store carbon. - It is believed that UK peatlands store over 3 billion tonnes of carbon! Peat was a popular choice for gardeners as well as a heat source for many homes. Great work by the Peat-Free Partnership - and all the people/organisations who've collaborated to get this letter out there! ?? #peatfree #endpeatsales #climatechange #biodiversity

?? Sonnedix has donated the funds to plant 5,000 trees in Portugal for #InternationalForestDay The tree planting will take place on the largest mountain range in Portugal, the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, an area devastated in 2022 by a wildfire that burnt down close to 25% of the total land area. Driven by one of our core values, to ‘Do the right thing’, we are committed to making a difference in the countries we operate. With our donation, our partners One Tree Planted will be planting 5,000 trees in the Natural Park which will be a mix of endemic species, such as maritime and Scots pine, as well as cork and holm oaks, and chestnut and strawberry trees. The project will aim to restore as much of the common land as possible, promote the recovery of biodiversity, and support the return of ecosystem resilience and adaptation to climate change. We hope that the trees planted with our donation will also provide positive social and economic impacts for the local community, as this common land has historically facilitated activities that support the local economy, such as small-scale forestry and agricultural activities. #NetZero #Reforestation #PoweringaBrightFuture

?? Pollinator of the week = Wool carder bee ?? Plant of the week = Rowan ? Action of the week = Find out what actions your council is taking for pollinators As of March last year, every council on the island of Ireland has signed up as a partner to the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan. By becoming Council Partners, local authorities agree to consider the recommendations of the Pollinator Plan when developing their policies, plans, and management decisions, commit to carrying out evidence-based actions as recommended in the Pollinator Plan guidelines for councils, and provide a report on their work each year. We've reached a huge milestone, but still have a long way to go if we want a landscape where pollinators can survive and thrive. ??The Journey to Revive Mtwapa Creek's Mangroves ?? Six years ago, the lush mangrove forests of Mtwapa Creek in Kenya thrived, providing a bountiful harvest of fish for local communities. Women fondly recall a time when their husbands returned home with plentiful catches, ensuring their families were well-fed. Mangroves, known as breeding sites for fish, were vital to the creek's rich biodiversity. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought unforeseen challenges. With quarantine measures in place, many had no choice but to cut down the mangroves for charcoal, their only means of survival. The influx of people migrating from urban areas to rural regions further accelerated deforestation. Tragically, about 60% of the mangroves were cut, leaving bare ground and stumps where thriving trees once stood. Today, the impact is evident. Fish catches have plummeted, and the ecosystem has suffered greatly. But the community is not standing idly by. United by a common purpose, they have formed a user group dedicated to tree planting and restoring the mangroves they once relied on. Watch this inspiring video to see how these determined women and their husbands are tirelessly working in the muddy mangrove terrain to bring life back to Mtwapa Creek. Their story is a powerful reminder of resilience and the collective effort needed to heal our environment. Big shout out Plant-for-the-Planet for the support. At Lower Chew Forest we’ll be creating over 123 acres of species-rich grassland, as part of a mosaic of interconnected habitats that will support local wildlife. ?????? Can you help nature’s recovery today by supporting our crowdfunding campaign? Our mission really couldn’t be more urgent. Biodiversity is in crisis. With many vital habitats under threat by human activity, it’s no surprise that 41% of UK species are in decline, with some bird species reduced as much as 96%. ?? To ensure the diversity of our grassland, we’ll be sowing a mix of 36 different seeds with 9 grasses, such as Lady's bedstraw, Bird's-foot-trefoil, Sainfoin and Yellow Rattle. These species have been carefully selected to support a huge range of pollinators, invertebrates, small mammals and ground-nesting birds. Spaces like this, free from pesticides and agriculture are increasingly rare in the British countryside and form an essential part of our ambitions for nature restoration. We’ve still got a long way to go before we can start putting our plans into action. Your support will allow us to buy the seed to establish new grassland habitats as part of the Lower Chew Forest project, as well as provide everything required to plant the first of 100,000 trees before Christmas. Every donation (up to £250) will be matched so your impact will be doubled! ?? https://lnkd.in/ecuMnWgf ?? It's so easy to skim over these brief impact communications, so I invite you to reflect for a moment on this one... 37 people employed in a remote Kenyan town with few employment opportunities to work in greenhouse operation that provides trees for reforestation across the landscape... a fraction of the >400 fulltime jobs that have been created by the Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project. How do you protect forests? By creating value for the people who choose to conserve them. REDD+ is the only proven, scalable mechanism that enables us to do this in every threatened forest on our dear planet Earth.
The Wildlife Works Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project's Greenhouse Department has significantly boosted local employment and sustainable development. ???? ???? Local involvement is on the rise in every way. The department now employs 39 staff members, 37 from the local community. Seedling suppliers have increased from 131 to 227, showcasing the community's active participation in the forest economy. And since 2022, 802 farmers have been trained at the demonstration site, with many then adopting sustainable agricultural practices. This progress highlights the project's dedication to creating sustainable livelihoods, reducing poverty, and fostering inclusive economic development. Curious to know more? We heard that Los Alamos became a Bee City, so we were wondering, what does that exactly means? ?? The title "Bee City" in the United States implies that the city has taken specific measures to protect and promote the health of bees and other pollinators. This title is granted by Bee City USA: a non-profit organization that works to encourage pollinator conservation in communities across the country. Being designated as a Bee City implies that the city has made concrete commitments, such as creating pollinator habitats, reducing the use of toxic pesticides, public education on the importance of pollinators, and adopting policies that favor their protection. In summary, a Bee City is committed to promoting and protecting the health of bees and other pollinators through concrete actions and public awareness of their importance to ecosystems and agriculture.
