This was a very fun presentation - all the 3Ls had such good energy (especially for a Friday before Spring Break!!). Thanks for hosting us, Alice and Lewis & Clark Law School! One great question we got: "If I'm working and won't be available to start a new job before December, when should I start looking?" Don't waste time applying to open job postings you won't be able to start for months - very few, if any, employers will wait when they have a current need. If you're actively available (for example, you've passed your licensure, finished your externship, made the move, etc.) then you can be actively applying for posted jobs. However, don't discount the power of using the time when you are not quite ready to start to set yourself up for success! Network, schedule informational interviews, go to events, do research, get your materials and LinkedIn in order, follow recruiters, etc. so that when you're ready, your search will feel like it has good momentum (and a much more human connection) already.
Finished up my two-week tour of speaking with students with a visit to Lewis & Clark Law School, joined by my colleagues (and attorney experts) Kelsey and Abby, to discuss navigating the job search as a new attorney. Thank you to Alice Emerson for inviting us and thanks to all of the students for sticking with us for 3 hours (!) of presentations and asking plenty of great questions. Good luck to everybody, you got this!!

This month I marked two milestones: my 20th Harvard Law School reunion and the 10th anniversary of the Houston office of Kirkland & Ellis. The Texas LawBook article linked below captures the uncertainty and possibility that Andy Calder, John Pitts, Will Bos, Matt Pacey, Rhett Van Syoc and Bill Benitez faced in launching Kirkland's new office. Eighteen months later, I embarked on the same roller coaster in launching our Houston litigation practice. My big insight from marking both of these occasions? Absolutely take the hard option when you are young. Why? Honestly, because you have less to lose. Walking the halls of Harvard Law now feels much more intimidating than when I arrived as a student. Back then, I just put one foot in front of the next and did the work. Today, I appreciate what's at stake: the unbelievable talent and smarts of my classmates and professors, the intense work, and the precariousness of the career paths that followed. Likewise, my thought process in joining Kirkland was simple: "Kirkland is hiring young partners so someone of my vintage in Houston is going to get this job. Why not me?" Having now done the job, I can come up with all sorts of reasons why not. But I grabbed it because I didn't have much to lose. Here's to embracing the hard option to get me to my 30th HLS reunion and 20th Houston office anniversary! And always encouraging my kids do the same. https://lnkd.in/gnyrB2k2

Giving Day at Cornell Law School is also Pi Day (3.14)! In honor of all our favorite Pi(e)s (??????), here are three ways you can be a “piece” of something bigger: ?? Fuel scholarship support for talented students. Today, 8 in 10 Cornell Law students receive scholarships and financial aid. As a result, the debt load of students at graduation is lower than it has been in many years. With your support, this exciting trend will continue. ?? Provide resources to Cornell Law’s unique clinics and practicums. These programs help Cornell Law students acquire the practical skills and experience to represent a diversity of clients in need of legal services. Your support funds 27 specialized clinics and practicums that provide life-changing learning opportunities. ???? Support veterans in need of legal services. The Veterans Law Practicum provides a vital service to our community’s veterans. With your help, we can expand our services, and enable students and faculty to increase their caseloads. When we join forces as one Cornell Law community for #CornellGivingDay, we can make a remarkable impact. Join us on Thursday for celebration of the promise and potential of the next generation of Cornell lawyers. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3PcrFNG
