In a significant move to bolster support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Senator Sonya Halpern announced a new partnership between her office and Reinvestment Fund's HBCU Brilliance Initiative (Brilliance Initiative). The collaboration aims to enhance funding, resources, and opportunities for HBCUs, empowering them to continue their vital role in the community. ? The Brilliance Initiative will play a crucial role in this partnership, driving programmatic innovation and expanding access to essential technical assistance and capital funding. Together, Senator Halpern’s office and the Initiative will work to bridge gaps and break down barriers that have historically hindered HBCUs from reaching their full potential. Reinvestment Fund has been awarded a New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) allocation, advancing our mission to create opportunities in underserved communities. This award enables us to expand our impact nationwide, supporting investments that reduce racial inequities, drive community revitalization, and provide essential services. We have been a recipient of NMTC allocations since 2003, investing over $657 million in 77 transformative projects across the country. This award will enable us to prioritize investments in communities in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, where historical disinvestment, redlining, and other structural inequities have left lasting economic challenges. “This funding allows us to support critical projects – from healthcare and education to workforce development – breaking down barriers to employment and economic self-sufficiency,” said Reema Fakih, Managing Director of National Lending at Reinvestment Fund. “It’s a vital step in creating lasting change and dismantling systemic barriers for communities of color.” #CommunityRevitalization #NMTC #EconomicEquity ?? https://lnkd.in/e5GmwND9

Siree Morris, a member of the Growing Diverse Housing Developers (GDHD) initiative in partnership with Reinvestment Fund, has just celebrated the groundbreaking of the highly anticipated $336 million redevelopment project at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) — where he is the co-developer. At the groundbreaking, Siree expressed the transformative impact this project will have on Newark's downtown."This development here is going to change and continue to change Newark into a 24/7 city. Where people can come and they can live, they can work, they can play." The redevelopment will add hundreds of new affordable residences, retail, restaurants, outdoor gathering spaces, and a state-of-the-art education and community center with professional rehearsal spaces. ?? Congratulations to Siree and the entire team driving this public-private, community-centered project for Newark’s future. According to the latest U.S. Census data, Philadelphia’s poverty rate dropped from 21.7% to 20.3% between 2022 and 2023—marking the most significant yearly decline in over a decade. This reflects steady improvement since 2011, when poverty hit a high of 28.7%. However, as Reinvestment Fund’s Emily Dowdall points out, this decline doesn’t tell the whole story. While some families are earning more, other factors—like lower-income families moving to the suburbs—are also contributing to these shifts. Plus, disparities remain: the poverty rate among Black and Latino residents is still double that of white Philadelphians. And deep poverty, affecting nearly 1 in 10 Philadelphians, remains unchanged. We're at the Governor’s Conference on Housing and Economic Development 2024 in City of Atlantic City!
