The Cherokee County School Board is working together on new initiatives to “Elevate the Excellence in effective School Board-Superintendent Governance.”?As part of their work focused on this Key Priority, School Board members developed four Core Beliefs for what CCSD must do to meet and exceed community expectations.? These newly developed Core Beliefs were shared for the first time at this month’s School Board work session:? 1. All students are highly engaged in their education and capable of reaching their full learning potential. 2. Employees are trusted and supported as professionals and provided with resources to elevate student outcomes. 3. Families and our community are involved partners in student success and can expect all students to receive the best education possible. 4. Schools create positive and welcoming environments as well as have clear expectations and accountability in all academic and operational areas. I've learned (more than) a few things about what school boards should and should not be doing during my Fellowship with Leadership ISD. Here are a few of them: School board races are non-partisan. Full stop. Being conservative or not does not matter for the role of a trustee. School boards are to set goals for the superintendent. The superintendent is to then run the district, make staffing decisions, and allocate funding to programs in order to meet the goals as set by the board. The board is not to get involved in the day-to-day running of a district, such as handling performance reviews of administration or teachers. The board should be handling the performance evaluation of the superintendent in meeting the goals the board has established. One of the key roles of a school board is to approve an annual budget consistent with the district's vision. This requires an in-depth evaluation of the current costs, projected costs, and projected funds incoming through taxes. Bond funds are different but certainly no less important. Boards are not to select or approve curriculum, create programming, or manage the school experience for students or their families. Championing the importance of a diverse higher education sector - a new GuildHE manifesto. The higher education sector is made up of a huge range of providers - including conservatoires, smaller universities and specialist institutions - delivering a wide variety of learning environments, course types and qualification routes. The UK higher education sector is stronger for being diverse providing choice for students and education often in remote parts of the UK. However, the financial pressures facing higher education place this diversity at risk. Though I’m not yet formally in post, I’m happy to share the GuildHE manifesto containing key recommendations for the next government. Our focus must remain on championing the diversity of our sector. It’s richness is derived from its wide variety of providers; some large, some medium-sized, some small; some more traditional, some very new; some providing on-campus, off-campus, blended learning or all 3; all delivering to towns, cities and regions across the devolved nations, enabling students of all ages to undertake lifelong learning that improves their lives, careers and experiences. There is no one-size fits all, and unless we think creatively, we risk losing the diversity that makes UK HE so attractive to both domestic and international students. Not only that, a less attractive, strong and robust system would weaken the UK’s soft power around the world at a time we need to be showing ourselves as deep and meaningful collaborative partners to tackle global challenges. I look forward to working with my GuildHE team and many of you in (and outwith) the sector to secure the strength and diversity of our sector!
