From technological advances to balancing the ever changing impacts of climate change; as architects we can use adaptive leadership and creative thinking to positively impact communities.??Some of us began our careers hand drafting, shifted to AutoCAD, and now manage the efficiencies of teams working in Revit, Rhino and Grasshopper.? The continuous dialogue on the potential impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to our industry is now a prevalent topic and the rate at which change happens is even more rapid. “AIA is working to transform the day-to-day practice of architecture to achieve a zero-carbon, resilient, healthy, just, equitable built environment, for everyone.” This is an enormous task, but it is important to have collaborative thinking with a focus on mission. Recently, we were lucky to host a Friday evening power talk with Braden Hill, titled Colonialism to Country: Truth Telling through Architecture. Professor Braden Hill, a Noongar Wardandi man from the southwest of Western Australia, currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students, Equity and Indigenous) at Edith Cowan University (ECU). In recent years, he has played a key role in shaping the new ECU City Campus by integrating Noongar and broader Indigenous narratives into the architecture and life of the campus. Drawing from his project insights and personal experiences, Braden's talk covered a tonne of important ground. He emphasised the importance of always remembering that we are on Country, wherever we are in Australia, and highlighted the need to involve Indigenous leaders in projects from the earliest stages. Beyond that, Braden stressed the responsibility of everyone involved – including clients, architects, and landscape architects – to conduct thorough research into the histories of a site and the people connected to it. At the heart of his message was a call for all of us to be open to learning and to get more comfortable with the discomfort that can come with having essential (and in most cases, probably overdue) conversations. Richard Kendall, one of the talk’s attendees, nicely summed up his key takeaways: -?Don't ask for guidance from Indigenous colleagues without having done your prior research. Put some bloody effort in. There is no magic website. -?Surfacing stories about individuals otherwise lost to history is important. -?If you're sharing a decision-making table, don't allow others to leave the table for a smaller more exclusive table where the 'real decisions' are made. OUR LATEST BLOG POST RIBA publish ‘Inclusion Emergency’ Darren was invited to offer his insights on the Architectural profession for the new ‘Inclusion Emergency, Diversity in Architecture’ book by Hannah Durham & Grace Choi, published by RIBA Publishing. The book aims to encourage understanding across the industry, asking professionals to reflect on the industry and addresses critical questions to provides steps towards meaningful change. It is widely acknowledged that architecture is at a tipping point and if there isn’t any change there is a risk of limiting our relevance in today’s society, this book looks to engage in meaningful debate to show a way forward. Within the book are insights from many leading voices, including Amy Francis-Smith, Clare Nash, Mary Holmes, Nick Walker and Sumita Singha to name a few. Each individual highlights a different topic and expresses their experiences to provide a rich foundation for a future of architecture, representing the diverse population the RIBA serve. The book aims to help those who are under-recognised to find the role models, community and tools to feel confident, supported and valued. It will also help those intimidated by change to understand why it is important and provoke constructive action. We stand as vanguards in an era of transformation, tasked with not only adapting but thriving. Architects are ambitious, and we have great aspirations for our Institute. We had an incredible week in Adelaide with the Australian Institute of Architects, Board meeting, National Council Meeting, National Awards and #ArchitectureAu's Design Speaks #Symposium curated by Gold Medalist Philip Thalis. Together across 3 days we considered the potential as we pivot to a low-carbon future, leveraging digital transformation and amplifying the value of architects' complex technical skills in the reweaving, remaking, and the evolution of cities where we do more with less. By overcoming barriers and embracing innovation, architects can transform challenges into opportunities, championing the value of good design. Change requires a growth mindset, great culture and mindful behaviors to build both collective and individual agency. Change requires evolution in our structures to enable transformation, innovation and value creation in practice. Together, we discussed how we can realize a future where our profession leads the charge against climate change, creating a world that values sustainability, equity, justice and great architecture for all. We are focused on making a positive impact as we advance architecture together, honoring our legacy whilst paving the way for the future of our profession, enabling everyone to benefit from great architecture. It was fabulous to engage across generations of the institute, but I must mention here the incredible future embodied in our EmAGN members. The incredible Jennifer McMaster winning the National Emerging Architects Prize. The inspirational #Bradley #Kerr at the symposium found a room in tears with emotion, empathy, respect for country and culture, newfound understanding / perspective and hope. Bradley powerfully communicated the importance of questioning our bias, and mental models that uphold existing structures beginning with the lesser known interpretation of the famous Descartes quote: “I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am.” The future looks bright across our diverse community as we advance architecture together. As we celebrate World Architecture Day 2024 with the theme of Empowering the next generation to participate in urban design, I cannot help but reflect on my motivation behind my PhD research on Complex Urban Integration. My research explores how architects can address the socio-spatial integration of migrants, tackling some of the most pressing challenges our cities face today. Architecture isn’t just about designing buildings—it’s about shaping cities that are sustainable, inclusive, and equitable.
