Year 1 ? Year 122 In 1902, the Port of Gulfport was officially recognized as an international deepwater seaport, thanks to the dredging of the channel and completion of rail connections. Originally known as the gateway to the Midwest from Central America, our reach has expanded significantly through direct rail connections, serving most of the U.S. and into Canada. While much has changed, our commitment to service remains strong. #historical #logistics #port #gulfcoast #mississippi #supplychain #customerservice

The Panama Canal, a vital waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, was officially opened on August 15, 1914. Its construction was a colossal engineering feat, involving the excavation of over 170 million cubic yards of material. The canal greatly reduced the maritime journey between the oceans, saving time and fuel for ships traversing its locks and channels. The idea of a canal across Panama dates back to the early 16th century, but it wasn't until the French attempted and failed in the late 19th century that the United States took on the project. The U.S. successfully completed the canal, and it remained under American control until it was handed over to Panama on December 31, 1999, as part of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties. The canal's strategic importance and impact on global trade continue to be significant. #civilengineering #civilconstruction #engineeringwonders #transportationengineering #waterresourceengineering

There ya have it folks... POV Crossing the Canal.. The Panama Canal serves as a maritime shortcut that saves time and costs in transporting all kinds of goods. The 80-kilometer [51miles] waterway communicates the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in one of the narrowest points of the American Continent. Since its opening in 1914, more than one million ships from all over the world have transited the Canal. The historic millionth mark was reached on September 4, 2010 with the transit of the bulk carrier Fortune Plum. The interoceanic waterway uses a system of locks with two lanes that operates as water elevators and raises the ships from sea level to the level of Gatun Lake, 26 meters above sea level, to allow the crossing though the Continental Divide, and then lowers the ships to sea level on the other side of the Isthmus. The water used to raise and lower the vessels in each set of locks is obtained from Gatun Lake by gravity and poured into the locks through a main culvert system that extends under the locks chamber from the sidewalls and the center wall.

The Panama Canal is one of the world's oldest and most valuable canals, initiated by the French but completed by the Americans. Construction began in 1904 and was completed in 1914. However, during the construction process, which involved combating diseases such as malaria and yellow fever, more than 27,500 people lost their lives. The canal provides significant time and cost savings for ships. Previously, ships had to navigate around Cape Horn to travel from New York to San Francisco, but thanks to the canal, this distance has been reduced to 9,500 km. The canal proves its importance by transporting over 140,000 ships and 203 million tons of cargo annually. One of the most remarkable engineering features of the Panama Canal is its elevation of 25 meters above sea level. To overcome this height difference, impeccable engineering was applied. Ships are first raised by 25 meters to the canal level and then lowered by the same amount to sea level. This is achieved by utilizing the principle of 'Fluid Equilibrium’. #panama #panamacanal #setransportation #maritime #transportation #maritimetransport #ocean #sea #shipdesign #shiprepair #shipbuilding
