? We couldn't let this #SummerLearningWeek end without taking a moment to celebrate the transformative power of summer programs! Summer is a key time for young people, and youth programs play a vital role in ensuring ALL youth have enriching, rewarding, and equitable summer experiences. Across New York City, community-based organizations, educational systems, and cultural institutions are stepping up as we speak to ensure that young people have opportunities to maintain their learning from the school year, build relationships and social connections, learn new skills, and form lifelong memories. This week in particular, we celebrate the organizations, programs, and educators who put their all into this work. Thanks to National Summer Learning Association for advocating for summer learning and championing the providers who make it possible! ?? Meet Emily, a passionate science teacher who embarked on a transformative Summer Project journey with us! ??? "I would 100% recommend Summer Projects. I gained more than I thought I would. I found it really interesting," she shares. ?? Emily dove into researching Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) policies and parental engagement strategies, contributing to improvements in schools. "Our work has made it easier for schools to quickly find gaps and make changes that will massively improve their own policies and practices," she reflects. ??? "Sometimes schools can feel pretty isolated. Our work highlighted how crucial the connection between head teachers, staff, and other schools is." Beyond policy impact, Emily discovered ways to engage with parents proactively, "I've established things I can do as a classroom teacher to better support my pupils." ? Youth Development Organization (YDO) 2024 summer program employed 57 high school & college students from the Lawrence area to mentor 167 students in grades 3-8. They offered 43 different STEM and arts classes - all designed around participants' interest and taught by and for kids. This is what developing our youth (not just education) should look like. This is how we give kids in inner cities a better chance. If you're moved like I've been for the last 10 years, consider investing.

https://lnkd.in/erksq5tm Week three of our summer camp.Summer camp offers a unique blend of fun and learning, particularly benefiting children with special needs. These camps provide structured activities that promote social interaction, skill development, and self-confidence. Engaging in group sessions allows children to practice communication, cooperation, and problem-solving in a supportive environment. These experiences are crucial for preparing them for the school setting, where they will need to manage similar interactions and tasks.Additionally, summer camps often incorporate therapeutic activities tailored to individual needs, enhancing physical, cognitive, and emotional development. By participating in these activities, children with special needs can develop resilience, adaptability, and a sense of accomplishment. This holistic approach not only prepares them for the academic challenges of a classroom but also helps them navigate the social aspects of school life, fostering a smoother transition and a more inclusive educational experience.

Years ago, I worked a ropes course program with Christine Earp when she did something that blew my fragile twenty-something mind. "Mark, this is my twelve-year-old son, Brendon. He's going to facilitate the group with us today." "Shouldn't he be in school? It's a weekday." I replied. "This is his school today. He gets to practice everything he's learning and experience what his mother does for a living firsthand." We treated Brendon like one of the team, and he helped where he could. He made his mother proud. *** Today, I brought my twelve-year-old daughter to a WorkPlay event. Peggy was our unofficial "intern" and co-facilitator as we led a team-building day for?West End Elementary School. She did AWESOME! The teachers loved her energy and enthusiasm. My two takeaways: 1. Kids are far more capable than we give them credit for sometimes. 2. You never know which of your decisions will stick with someone and bear fruit twenty years later. Make good choices. Thanks, Christine, for leading by example and bringing your child to work all those years ago. #workplay, #teamwork, #teambuilding, #funatwork, #professionaldevelopment, #parenthood, #takeyourkidtoworkday, #romega, #westendelementary, #rcs , #choosewisely, #leadership, #homeschool, #exerientiallearning

Today, we highlight Niagara University's Inclusive NU Summer Camp Program, funded in part by the Martha H. Beeman Foundation. Inclusive NU is a one-week college and career readiness summer camp developed to provide a fundamental foundation for twenty-five Niagara County students with disabilities to successfully navigate the transition from high school to meaningful careers or higher education. There is a critical gap in education and support for high school students with disabilities to adequately prepare for transition into independence. By providing tailored guidance and resources, Inclusive NU equips students with the necessary skills to succeed in higher education and/or the workforce, fostering their independence and self-confidence. The program objective is to increase the number of students with disabilities who can: identify a career field that they would like to be employed in; participate in college-based learning experiences in an authentic college setting; obtain essential skills to gain and maintain meaningful employment, as independently as possible; effectively advocate for themselves as they pursue academic and/or employment goals. #liveunited #giveunited #dei #inclusion #summercamp #niagarauniversity

The article explains how some high schools in states like Indiana, Colorado, and Delaware are changing their approach to better prepare students for life after graduation. Traditional classroom setups aren't working as well anymore, so schools are offering more practical learning experiences, like internships and partnerships with local businesses. These programs help students gain hands-on skills in areas they’re interested in, whether they plan to go to college or start working right after high school. Link: https://bit.ly/3ZIrRKH
