Do you know the story of The Oyster Restoration Company? Since our beginning in 2017, we have been dedicated to restoring native oyster reefs and revitalising marine ecosystems. From establishing our first hatchery in Orkney to deploying oyster spat in Scotland’s seas, every milestone brings us closer to a healthier, more sustainable coastline. Our journey continues as we partner with organisations like Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and implement innovative techniques to restore native oyster populations. Together, we're working towards a future where oysters thrive, biodiversity flourishes, and ocean health is restored! ?? #OysterRestoration #SustainableFuture #OurStory

#world #turtle #day. Age makes us all move a little slower, but the world's oldest living land animal is at least used to the pace.By the name of #Jonathan, who just reached the estimated age of #191 this year - a milestone even for his long-lived species. #Title: Celebrating World Turtle Day: #ACalltoActionfor #TurtleConservation As we celebrate World Turtle Day on #May #23rd It's essential to reflect on the significance of these incredible creatures in our ecosystems and the urgent need for their conservation. Turtles and tortoises have roamed the Earth for millions of years, embodying resilience, wisdom, and a profound connection to our planet's health. Yet, despite their ancient lineage, turtles face unprecedented threats in the modern world. Habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, illegal trade, and bycatch in fishing gear are just some of the challenges pushing many turtle species towards the brink of extinction. As professionals and individuals passionate about environmental sustainability, we have a responsibility to take action to protect turtles and their habitats. Here are some ways we can make a difference this World Turtle Day. ?#Educate Ourselves and Others #SupportConservationOrganizations #ReducePlasticPollution #FosterRespectforWildlife?.?????????????????????????????????? This World Turtle Day, let's reaffirm our commitment to protecting these ancient mariners and the ecosystems they inhabit. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a brighter future for turtles and all life on Earth. Join me in celebrating World Turtle Day and taking meaningful action towards turtle conservation. #Togetherwecanbethechangeourplanetneeds. #WorldTurtleDay #TurtleConservation #ProtectOurTurtles #EnvironmentalConservation

?? Happy Oyster Day ?? from Moving Water Alliance! ?? Today, we celebrate the incredible power of oysters and their vital role in our marine ecosystems. Oysters not only provide delicious seafood but also offer three crucial benefits: 1. Water Filtration: Oysters filter and clean the water, removing pollutants and improving water quality. 2. Habitat Creation: Oyster reefs provide essential habitats and shelter for a variety of marine life, promoting biodiversity. 3. Coastal Protection: Oyster reefs act as natural barriers, reducing coastal erosion and protecting shorelines from storm surge damage. Here’s how you can join in the celebration: - Enjoy Sustainable Seafood: Support local fisheries and enjoy responsibly sourced oysters.?? - Participate in Restoration Projects: Volunteer with local organizations to help restore oyster reefs. ?? - Learn and Share: Educate yourself about the importance of oysters and share your knowledge with others. Let’s honor these amazing mollusks and work together to protect our oceans! ?????????? #OysterDay #Oysters #MarineConservation #MovingWaterAlliance #SustainableSeafood #OceanHealth #EcoFriendly #SaveOurSeas #MarineLife

This summer, Oregonians were thrilled to learn (and for some, to see) that a pair of sea otters were?spotted?in Cannon Beach! Sea otter sightings in Oregon’s coastal waters are exceptionally rare, as the species has been locally extinct since the 1940s. Their absence has had profound ecological impacts. Sea otters are a crucial keystone species. By feeding on sea urchins, they help maintain healthy, thriving kelp forests. Without sea otters in the nearshore waters, unchecked sea urchins have devastated Oregon’s kelp forests, which are essential for providing food, habitat, and shelter for countless species. As we seek solutions to address biodiversity loss and the climate crisis, restoring sea otters to Oregon’s nearshore ecosystem is vital for supporting a healthy and resilient ocean environment. The ecological benefits of sea otters were confirmed in a 2022 report by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which stated: “There would be multiple substantial biological and ecological benefits to the nearshore marine ecosystem from a reintroduction of sea otters to their historical range in northern California and Oregon.” While this study lays important groundwork for a potential reintroduction, more must be done to make it a reality—starting with Congress. Please reach out to the Oregon Congressional Delegation and urge them to support and fund sea otter recovery efforts! What better way to celebrate Sea Otter Awareness Week than by taking action to help bring this unique, charismatic, and ecologically vital species back home? #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek

Exploring the Wildlife in BC Forests British Columbia’s forests are home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, from majestic bears and deer to small yet vital species like birds and insects. These animals play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of our ecosystems. Wildlife contributes to: Pollination and seed dispersal: Birds and insects help plants and trees regenerate, ensuring the health of the forest. Nutrient cycling: Animals break down organic matter and enrich the soil, promoting growth for future generations of trees. Ecosystem regulation: Predators and herbivores keep populations in balance, maintaining a thriving ecosystem. Protecting BC’s wildlife is essential to preserving the biodiversity and ecological integrity of our forests. By understanding their role and impact, we can create strategies to ensure both wildlife and forests thrive for generations to come. What’s your favorite wildlife encounter in BC forests? ?? Spotted: A Colourful, Unwelcome Visitor in Brighton’s Waters! ?? This summer, a bright and beautiful Atlantic Blue Crab was found in Brighton—dead. Then, in October, another one showed up—alive! ???? These crabs, with their striking white and orange claws and blue legs, are stunning but seriously out of place. They’re native to the western Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico—not the English coast. ?? What’s the Problem? Non-Native Species (NNS) like this crab often arrive due to human activities, like ballast water transport or accidental release. While not all NNS are harmful, some become Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS), threatening local ecosystems and biodiversity. INNS are currently the second biggest global threat to biodiversity. ?? What’s Being Done? Defra and the UK government are ramping up efforts to tackle INNS through the 25 Year Environment Plan and a dedicated cross-governmental group. But we need your help too! ?? What Can You Do? Caught One? Do NOT release it—it’s an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Instead, hand it in to your local Marine Management Organisation (MMO) office. Seen One? Report your sightings on the iRecord platform (with photos, please!). Home | iRecord ?? Why Are They Here? The presence of NNS may be due to: Accidental or deliberate release Transport in ballast water Natural dispersal Climate change Your vigilance can make a difference! Let’s work together to monitor and protect our waters. ?? ?? Want to learn more? ARRC, in collaboration with ShoreRivers, recently constructed two large wetland cells covering over 6.5 acres of land in Massey, MD. These wetlands featured intricate microtopography and used woody debris to create sustainable habitats for amphibians, birds, invertebrates, insects and other wildlife. These wetlands also act as water storage and erosion buffers during heavy rainfall. To complete our restoration efforts, native trees, shrubs and aquatic plug species will be planted to enhance stabilization, foster biodiversity and help filter nutrients within the local water system.
