Rainforest Trust, with partner Rare Brasil, recently completed the protection of over 180,000 acres of mangrove forest in Brazil—part of the largest, most intact contiguous belt of mangroves in the world.? ? The protection of this habitat is an exciting win for the Amazon, for the traditional fishing communities of this region, for the fisheries themselves and for the climate. ? ? President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil signed decrees for the creation of the two new reserves completing the project in Brazil on the International Day of Forests, 21st March 2024.? ? This week, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) is convening at the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Headquarters in Rome, where member countries will assess and set priorities to safeguard Mediterranean fisheries and marine ecosystems. OceanCare, represented by Fabienne McLellan and Johannes Müller, is participating in the meeting.? ? Their habitats and fish populations are ravaged by aggressive fisheries, like #BottomTrawling, contributing both to biodiversity loss and climate change. ? The European Commission has proposed to ban destructive human activities in Marine Protected Areas by 2030, including bottom trawling. ??? ?
