Testing the supply chain is a challenge in any new industry, but doing so as a startup can be even more daunting. In fact, that was one of our primary objectives when we set out to build the first iteration of Kairos Power’s non-nuclear Engineering Test Unit.??? We recognized that exercising supplier relationships and establishing new production capabilities for high-temperature salt components would both be critical to delivering the Hermes Demonstration Reactor.? When we acquired the ETU site in February 2020, we had no way of knowing how the COVID-19 pandemic would further stress the supply chain. This experience presented new and unique challenges and a set of vital lessons learned that are shaping the path forward for ETU 2.0 and beyond.??

In these times of energy transition with the concerns of sustainability, nuclear energy has come back as an important player in the energy mix all over the world. Various solutions are being proposed for the development and deployment of nuclear energy, but as for any technology, and even more specifically for nuclear technologies, reliability and safety remain fundamental attributes to be guaranteed. This special issue aims exactly at sharing knowledge, expertise and experience on the reliability and safety of nuclear systems. Papers are welcome on methods and applications.

SMR stands for Small Modular Reactor, a type of nuclear reactor design. SMR safety refers to the measures and features implemented to ensure the safe operation of SMRs. Some key aspects of SMR safety include: 1.Passive safety systems: SMRs often incorporate passive safety systems that don't require electricity or human intervention to cool the reactor. 2. Containment structures: SMRs have robust containment structures to prevent radioactive releases into the environment. 3.Cooling systems: SMRs have multiple cooling systems to remove heat from the reactor core. 4.Emergency core cooling systems: SMRs have emergency core cooling systems to rapidly cool the reactor in case of an emergency. 5.Radiation protection: SMRs are designed to minimize radiation exposure to workers and the public. 6.Cybersecurity: SMRs have robust cybersecurity measures to prevent unauthorized access and ensure safe operation. 7.Human factors engineering: SMRs are designed with human factors in mind to reduce the likelihood of human error. 8.Regular maintenance and inspection: SMRs undergo regular maintenance and inspection to ensure safe operation. 9.Emergency planning and preparedness: SMRs have emergency plans and procedures in place in case of an accident. 10.Regulatory oversight: SMRs are subject to regulatory oversight and licensing to ensure compliance with safety standards. These features and measures contribute to the safe operation of SMRs and minimize the risk of accidents or radioactive releases.

Almost 3 years ago, I jumped from offshore oil and gas into the new world of #nuclear. What has surprised me most, is just how many transferable skills and how much knowledge and experience from the oil and gas sector is directly relevant to nuclear. The nuclear industry is entering its renaissance period, embracing new Innovations and First of a Kind Technologies that will create exciting new opportunities both in the UK and globally. New thinking and transferable experience from other industries, such as my old industry of oil and gas will play a key role in its success. #DestinationNuclear launched this week?and Jacobs is proud to be part of this first-of-its-kind national campaign to help future-proof the industry. The UK alone has plans to quadruple our nuclear capacity, meaning we will need +120,000 new jobs filled by 2030. The good news is that many people already have the skills to work in this sector, helping the UK towards a safer and cleaner future.
