In today’s blog post, Vitalik Buterin talks about #memecoins discussing whether their contribution to the #crypto space is a net positive or negative. His conclusion: while obviously the misuse and speculation around #memecoins is something we’d rather avoid, #memecoins can have a positive impact if used for (1) #charity (giving for a good cause) or (2) games (creating fun). In my opinion, his take on (2) is too narrow as he mainly references the need for good video games. And I agree, creating a good video game is difficult and expensive, something that most #memecoins cannot achieve. But is that the only way people can have fun? I don’t think so. What makes a game fun is enjoying an activity within a set of rules and some degree of competition, sometimes even with a social aspect tied to it. So if we’re brainstorming about ways how #memecoins can create fun we need to think more broadly than just video games. With a world that becomes more digital every day, there are many ways leveraging #web3 to create fun and using #memecoins as vehicles to build communities around it. Many people have fun creating content (be it music, art, or educational content) and there are even more people that like to consume that content. In that sense, #memecoins can be a way for content creators and their consumers to express membership, show support, and build communities. For me personally, I hope that #memecoins become tokens of support and belonging rather than ways of making a few bucks. How do we get there? Give support to the communities aiming towards that same goal and elevate them above the noise of scams and fraud! I developed a unique tabletop strategy board game called Vediic. The game introduces a new twist, challenging players to balance material gain with spirituality for victory.
