As we kick off Youth HOPE Month, we are excited to share that Chicago has been awarded $15 million to address youth homelessness! Young people with lived experience played a key role in obtaining the funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. They will also be instrumental in developing the strategy to utilize the funding to end youth homelessness in Chicago. #YouthHOPEMonth

Every year, 40,000 young people experience homelessness, making up 40% of all people without a home. For these young people, the odds are stacked against them. Without a safe and stable place to live, it’s nearly impossible to: ?? Finish studies. ?? Secure a job. ?? Build the foundation for an independent future. Youth homelessness isn’t just a personal crisis — it’s a challenge for our entire community. Leaving young people behind today locks in cycles of disadvantage for generations to come. The solution? A system that provides a range of housing options and includes proven models like Youth Foyers, to help young people transition to independence. This Christmas, let’s commit to investing in young people, because when they thrive, so do our communities ?? #10NewFoyers #50FoyersBy2030 #YouthHomelessness #TransformingLives #housingcrisis #housingsolutions #YouthFoyers #12DaysOfChristmas #EndYouthHomelessness

Over 700,000 minors experience homelessness in the US and face outsized obstacles to find housing and services, particularly in rural areas. In response, Missouri created a new tool to help unhoused minors exit homelessness quicker and connect them with services. The Flourish Initiative partnered with Missouri's Continuum of Care to develop a provider-initiated form (QMVF) in 2021 for youth aged 16-17 that serves as a legal certification for qualified minor status to allow easier access to services. In 2022, the Lab awarded a grant to Hsun-Ta Hsu, Ph.D. and Sarah Myers Tlapek, Ph.D. to determine whether the QMVF made it easier for unhoused minors to access housing services in rural Missouri, researching perceived barriers and pathways among providers in implementing the form. Researchers found the form helps providers understand unhoused youth’s needs and could reduce demand on Missouri’s court system, create an official pathway toward independent living, and connect youth with otherwise unavailable services. Part 2 The Answer Lies in the Gray Area The real challenge is navigating the gray area of human services. It’s about being creative, adaptive, and relentless in pursuing the best outcomes for each individual. That means building relationships, earning trust, and inspiring people to want more for themselves. At the same time, we must also recognize that for some, the immediate priority is simply ending their homelessness. And that’s okay. Housing First programs have their place, particularly for those who are chronically homeless and in crisis. But if we want to create real, lasting change, we need more options. We need programs that pair housing with accountability, wraparound services, and a clear pathway to recovery, stability, and self-sufficiency. A Call to Action Homelessness isn’t black and white. It’s messy, complex, and deeply personal. Solving it requires compassion, creativity, and a willingness to meet people where they are—while also helping them envision and work toward a better future. If we truly want to make a difference, we must embrace the complexity, invest in diverse approaches, and ensure that our systems reflect the dignity and worth of every individual we serve. Let’s continue this conversation. How do you think we can balance compassion and accountability in addressing homelessness? Part 2
