A proposal for this "canine comfort station" was offered to New York City in 1955 but never adopted. This elaborate canine urinal (amusingly placed near a fire hydrant), was designed as an alternative to dogs using sidewalks as outdoor toilets. The “Curb Your Dog” campaign and statute of 1937 allowed dogs to evacuate into gutters with a fine of $25 for non-compliance. But that law was insufficient, and by the early 1970s the sidewalk canine waste problem was catastrophic. A “poop scoop” law was put into effect in 1978, requiring owners to clean up or face a fine of $100. Today’s fine is $250. Learn more in "Pets and the City"—on view through April 20, 2025.
