How helpful is your community? We're conducting research to learn how people in local neighbourhoods support each other. So far, the research highlights a strong interest in community engagement and a willingness to help others, particularly when facilitated through accessible platforms like timebanking apps. However, barriers such as lack of awareness and time constraints still need to be addressed to encourage broader participation in community support initiatives. A new report on HUD User assesses how well the current Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) allocation formula aligns with the community needs index. The report, which builds on decades of prior research, finds significant disparities, suggesting funding inequities in the current formula, and discusses the main problems that contribute to these inequities. The Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) Refresh Committee recently released their?Community Engagement Summary Report. This report is a summary of the community engagement that was started last year, for CIHR to learn the parts of the SPOR program that are working well and highlights area where improvements can be made. Conduct thorough research to understand community demographics, existing resources, and potential partnerships. Next, establish clear goals and objectives for your Community Outreach Program. Define the target audience or beneficiaries and determine the scope of services or activities you plan to offer. Develop a mission statement that reflects the program's purpose and values. Engage stakeholders and community members early on to gather input, build support, and foster collaboration. Seek partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and government agencies that can provide resources, expertise, or funding. Create a detailed action plan outlining timelines, roles and responsibilities, budget considerations, and evaluation methods to measure the program's impact and success. Launch the program with an outreach strategy that includes promotional materials, events, and community engagement activities to raise awareness and attract participants. Absolutely brilliant news for those of us involved in all things community. As part of the Kings Speech it has been announced that The Community Right to Buy bids I have been involved in campaigning for as part of the We're Right Here campaign for is to be included in the new English Devolution Bill announced today. Lots of work to do to make that Bill as good as we want it needs to be. But definitely a big moment for all the areas I work in. This obviously impacts on my work at The Architectural Heritage Fund helping to protect and save heritage buildings for the good of the local community such as all of the great stuff happening at Stretford Public Hall and 100s of other fantastic organisations. It will support the work we are doing what the Heritage development trusts who are taking on the portfolio of buildings in their local areas to bring around significant community led regeneration and similarly the fantastic work being carried out through Platform Places. It will impact the co-ops and community groups, such as those I have been involved with through Coops UK and Stir to Action. Supporting organisations and communities to take on assets that help create spaces that help places thrive, often in the most deprived areas in the country. It will also impact on the work I have been doing around community health through my life as an acupuncturist. enabling more therapists to find space where they can provide affordable to find space where they can provide low cost therapy. The potential to support so many sectors heritage, arts, community, music, housing health and basically all the good things cannot be underestimated. There's obviously a long way to go lots of detail to get right but well done everyone on the campaign for helping get to this point. Challenge: we in government want to improve how we engage the public - and how we listen to their views. We need help measuring how well we do at such community engagement. Can you help us build a toolkit to measure what matters?

Three main takeaways from DAC 1) Many parts of the SPOR program are working great! If CIHR continues to improve how it’s run and sets clearer goals, we can break down barriers and help everyone live healthier lives. 2) It’s so important for people with diabetes and other chronic health issues—who often struggle to get healthcare—to be fully involved in research that focuses on them. By using better ways to measure our success, we can see how our SPOR projects are making a real difference. 3) Creating a system where patients, researchers, healthcare workers, and policymakers all learn and apply patient-focused research together is key to making the SPOR Program a success for everyone.
