I was delighted to see on the beach of the small Spanish town where I spend summers that they had special sand wheelchairs for disabled and elderly people. This meant that everyone had the chance to enjoy the beach and the water. When my Mum was alive two lifeguards even gave me a hand. One of the most overlooked areas of diversity and inclusion is accessibility. I have been to client offices which have either limited or even poor accessibility for anyone not fully mobile or able. ?Or if they do, they have to call for assistance causing them to feel "othered." Have you ever tried to navigate your way around any major city either with either a buggy or a suitcase?? Public transport is an impossible challenge. ?Can you imagine what it must be like for someone in a wheelchair? Time for some serious empathy followed by action. Disability Parking??? ? It’s an incredibly important and sensitive area of #transport planning policy for state and local government to get right. Data?from Transport NSW shows the number of disability parking permits issued under the NSW Mobility Parking Permits scheme has increased?to 417,000 in March 2023 from 277,000 in March 2007. Reflecting ?? the increasing aged population continuing to drive, and? ?? demand for greater availability of accessible parking bays. ??? ?? All New South Wales #Councils are required to have #Disability Inclusion Action Plans which set out their strategy and implementation of accessible parking bays to address this growing demand. Beginning in 2025, this funding will create a new programme which aims to build on the travel awareness, skills and confidence of disabled people when accessing local rail services. Supported by Hertfordshire County Council, Hertfordshire County Council One Vision’s Unpaid Carers Programme is committed to addressing the unique challenges faced by carers from diverse backgrounds. Recently, I had the privilege of speaking with unpaid carers from the Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities to understand their experiences. Key themes emerged around practical barriers, like language challenges and limited awareness of available support. Cultural expectations often mean that caregiving is seen as a family responsibility, which can hinder access to external help. Concepts of “care” can differ, with many carers experiencing a disconnect between their needs and the services offered. By fostering culturally sensitive solutions, we aim to create a support network that truly resonates with these carers and provides them the help they deserve. #OneVision #UnpaidCarers #Hertfordshire #CommunitySupport #CulturalAwareness
