Here are this week's updates in #oceanpolicy: – Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA-01)?introduced?the Ocean Restoration Research and Development Incentive Act, which would direct a new pilot program to expand research and development of ocean-based techniques and strategies to remove excess #CO2?from the atmosphere, restore #fisheries, and enhance ocean health. The bill seeks to fund and implement the research strategy recommended in a?2022 National Academies of Sciences report. https://lnkd.in/gAXyinsb – NOAA fisheries and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS)?finalized three rules?that revise #EndangeredSpeciesAct regulations, closing the book on a lengthy back-and-forth regarding the reversal of Trump Administration era changes to the act. The new rules aim to improve interagency cooperation, listing determinations, and critical habitat designations. https://lnkd.in/ghrD5MFb – DOI?approved?the Sunrise Wind project offshore Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island. https://lnkd.in/gX9pRXct Subscribe for more ocean and coastal policy news!

Wildlife–vehicle collisions are a significant threat to biodiversity, a risk to human safety, and cause animal welfare concerns. With rapid advances in remote sensing, machine learning, artificial intelligence and automation, there is significant potential to leverage technology to reduce Australia’s animal road toll. Rodney van der Ree, Technical Executive – Ecology, shared his global expertise in wildlife-vehicle interactions at a symposium sponsored by Transport for NSW and presented by WSP, the Australasian Network for Ecology & Transportation, and the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ). Participants explored technology that aims to reduce the frequency and severity of collisions between humans and animals on the world’s roads and railways. In this article, Rodney and WSP ecologists Tahlia Townsend, Charlotte George and Bastian Steinrücken, discuss symposium insights: https://lnkd.in/ghXN35NW #Transport #Biodiversity #Fauna #Ecology #DigitalSolutions #WeAreWSP

Environmental DNA (eDNA) is increasingly being used to detect the presence of species and assess biodiversity, but what is it, and how can we ensure it accurately informs #conservation and wildlife management? Our new Issues Brief explains ?? https://bit.ly/4bmCtlc #eDNA

Great short read from IUCN outlining what eDNA is and the important role it plays in monitoring #biodiversity at scale. My main takeaways are below: ?? ~ eDNA sampling is a non-invasive, sensitive, and accurate method for detecting many species including rare and hard-to-find species, complementing traditional approaches and aiding in habitat protection. ?? ~ eDNA helps focus red listed/invasive species control, track biodiversity changes through metabarcoding, and monitor impacts of habitat change and restoration efforts. ?? ~ Rapid and cost-effective, eDNA enhances understanding of species' ranges and biodiversity, though it requires careful validation.

New in Marine and Coastal Fisheries (open access): Shark depredation in recreational fisheries is an increasing source of human–wildlife conflict in the United States. This study quantified shark depredation in the Tarpon fishery and characterized the spatial ecology of Great Hammerheads and Tarpon in Bahia Honda in the Florida Keys. Depredation Rates and Spatial Overlap between Great Hammerheads and Tarpon in a Recreational Fishing Hot Spot, by Grace A. Casselberry, Gregory B. Skomal, Lucas P. Griffin, Jacob W.
