The difficulty with letting go of your fears and anxieties as a performer is that to do this takes letting go of control. But what we are standardly taught is that the answer lies in getting control. Whether it’s breath control, voice control, learning your script perfectly, or just people teaching you how to be in control, these things promote anxiety and tension rather than reducing them. Control is not the answer, in fact, the search for control is the problem. Freedom comes with trust and trust is the opposite of control. When you can trust that you will survive, even thrive, if you let go of control, that you will cope with whatever happens, then that's when true freedom comes. That's when you start pushing the envelope and achieving things you never thought possible. People so often believe that they are only as good as their last performance, that what they do defines who they are. This isn’t true. If you only define yourself by your mistakes then you will damage your self-esteem. Great performers can give terrible performances, and do. They just have enough self-belief to?not?let that define them. Separate who you are from what you do and what you do will to improve at a much greater rate.
