The University of Maine System (UMS) Board of Trustees (BoT) met on campus on Nov. 17 and 18 at the Wells Conference Center. The 16-member board, appointed by the Governor and approved by the Maine State Legislature, oversees UMS academic programs, faculty tenure, tuition, and budgets. The public comment portion began at 9:45 a.m. and concluded around 11:30 a.m., with 21 speakers total. Eighteen of them addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, while others raised concerns about student worker compensation and funding allocation within the UMS five-year capital plan. ??: Elora Griswold ??: Meredyth Waters Photo description: The governing body of the UMS BoT met at the Wells Conference Center for its latest meeting. Based on administration and board member comments, it appears likely that Beavercreek City Schools will bring the new school bond issue to voters again in May. Discussion of this topic begins at 1:49 time hack in the video below. Key reasons are as follows: 1. Students need the space. 2. Trailers are inefficient, costly, unsafe, and ugly. 3. The proposed plan is a community-driven plan and we don't currently have time to go back to the community to develop a new plan. 4. Unilaterally scaling back the plan our citizens brought us would make it no longer the community's plan. I urge you to get involved with our Levy Committee to help spread awareness of the need and the plans. Our students and teachers need the space to learn. Most people know that funding for public education in Texas lags far behind the national average. What many people may not know, however, is how badly special education is underfunded ($1.8 billion each year). To provide equitable educational opportunities for ALL students, state leadership must address special ed funding reform. Read more about it in my op-ed: https://lnkd.in/gfMAGUmX
My work in special ed is meaningful. But how much more can I take on?.pdf

Another successful PCACAC - Potomac and Chesapeake Region conference completed, and as in previous years, I depart feeling energized and eager for what lies ahead! Let’s do this! Key takeaways: 1. The FAFSA crisis poses significant impacts for Fall 2024 and beyond. 2. There’s more work ahead to integrate Direct Admissions into the mainstream and unlock its potential to broaden access for all students, but the future looks promising. ????? 3. The bond betweeen high school counselors and college admissions folks is stronger than ever! 4. Attending a conference in your hometown requires obligatory lunch with family, especially for a Waffle House fix unavailable in Chicago.

"When we provide students with high-quality public education, we provide them with the power to follow and achieve their dreams." This powerful quote underscores the critical role of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) in our educational landscape. MTSS isn't just about academic intervention; it's about creating an environment where every student can thrive, regardless of their starting point. By implementing robust systems work, we ensure that our schools are not just places of learning, but places of opportunity and hope. Every child deserves the chance to succeed, and through MTSS, we can tailor support to meet the diverse needs of our students, paving the way for their future success. Let’s continue to champion high-quality public education and robust systems that empower every student to reach their full potential. Together, we can make dreams a reality! #Education #MTSS #SystemsWork #StudentSuccess #PublicEducation #ESD105 #OSPI
