Earlier this summer, we released the first brief from their Housing and Climate Equity series. It took a deep dive into federally funded programs from the IRA and IIJA that directly benefit EJ communities and low-income tenants. In this second brief, Just Solutions and Ground Works Consulting embarked on a landscape scan and needs assessment by interviewing thirteen EJ leaders, including three from grasstops organizations and ten from grassroots advocacy and coalition organizations. This brief takes a bottom-up approach to assess the innovative practices at the intersection of climate and housing justice emerging from EJ organizations and the needs on the ground to amplify this crucial work. In my previous post, I talked about “Why Community Participation is Crucial for Successful Projects.” In this post, I want to discuss “Enhanced Relevance and Effectiveness in Sustainable Community Projects.” From my experience working with community leaders, I have found that involving community members in planning a new clean water supply system has proven to be a game-changer. By ensuring that the services offered align perfectly with the community’s needs, we have seen a significant increase in usage and maintenance. This approach not only guarantees that the system is well-kept but also generates revenues that are reinvested into other community projects. Importantly, this model reduces dependency on external funding, fostering a sense of ownership and sustainability within the community. Please share your experiences and comments below.

?? We’re thrilled to announce a bold new Commitment to Action with the Clinton Global Initiative: our “Bridge to Resiliency” initiative! ?? This powerful partnership aims to empower 100 small-to-mid-sized cities worldwide to confront and overcome climate challenges by connecting them with cutting-edge solutions tailored to their needs. This initiative is especially meaningful to our CEO, Michael Lake, who began his journey in public service under President Clinton’s mentorship in the White House. Inspired by Clinton’s dedication to community and resilience, Michael has carried forward those values into Leading Cities’ work, now connecting 100 cities worldwide with cutting-edge solutions for climate resilience. Through the AcceliGOV program, cities will gain access to fully funded pilot projects in renewable energy, water management, and waste reduction, supported by a network of 600 innovators from more than 70 countries. Together, with a $10 million fundraising goal, we’re creating pathways for cities to not only survive in the face of climate risks but to thrive as models of resilience and sustainable growth. This is a call to action for all cities, partners, and supporters—join us in building a resilient future for urban communities! ???? Exciting news! At PolicyLink, we are thrilled to announce the release of our comprehensive step-by-step guide on optimizing federal investments to benefit underserved communities in collaboration with @Emerald Cities Collaborative. We're working with state and local policymakers to help agencies navigate this process while following President Biden's groundbreaking Justice40 Initiative. This moment offers a critical opportunity to support thriving communities, which is ours to take and deliver on. The Justice40 Initiative aims to ensure that 40% of the overall benefits of certain federal investments — spanning climate, clean energy, affordable and sustainable housing, and more — flow to underserved communities. This initiative presents a unique opportunity for state and local governments to channel critical resources into communities that have been marginalized by underinvestment or overburdened by pollution. The guide covers how to: ? Identify J40 covered programs; ? Center project benefits in marginalized communities; ? Identify and consider community benefits and burdens; ? Develop a community benefits plan. This is a pivotal moment to ensure that federal investments reach the communities that need them the most. Let's seize this opportunity to drive meaningful change. Read more about our guidance and how you can implement these strategies in your community: https://lnkd.in/gTEc-Qc2 #Justice40 #CommunityInvestment #PolicyLink #EmeraldCitiesCollaborative #FederalFunding #SustainableCommunities #ClimateJustice

IVWF is highlighted in The Aspen Institute Community Strategies Group's new rural environmental justice case study: Building Funder Capacity to Work with Communities. IVWF's work in community through Learning Exchanges is mentioned: "While these Learning Exchanges do the work of traditional community capacity building and connecting — disconnected participants get to know decision-makers and learn how to navigate funding and power structures — they also facilitate capacity building for funders and decision-makers, who learn to work with the disconnected groups as equals, building a deeper understanding of their priorities and contexts." #capacitybuilding #healthequity #imperialvalley #lithiumvalley https://lnkd.in/dhcx6zxa
