Jimadores must determine the perfect moment to harvest—when the plant's sugar content is at its peak. This timing is crucial for producing high-quality tequila. ??? 3. SKLO [ pronounced as?S-Klo?] means “glass” in the Czech language, which aptly introduces the initial beginnings of the company, based in Singapore. SKLO EVOLUTION Designed in collaboration with the Sommelier Association of Singapore (SAS), SKLO presents the EVOLUTION Series. SAS represents the?best in the wine trade professionals with 210 top sommeliers based in Singapore. SAS provided extensive research to design the ultimate stemmed glass you would need for the enjoyment of every wine at its best. EVOLUTION’s tulip shaped bowl and thin rimmed silhouette focuses on how the wine structure, wine aromatics and clarity of flavours is best presented everytime you drink your favourite wines. EVOLUTION is meticulously hand made by the same glass artisans from Kvetna 1794 to provide the same quality and precision you would expect from the 230 year legacy of the Bohemian glassmaking tradition. THE PROCESS SKLO and SAS wanted a glass which can showcase wines at their optimal best. Using a structured approach, we built a methodology which focused on both the glass aesthetics as well as its technical performance, namely: -???????????Glassware Aesthetics: Design of the glass, including base stability, bowl size, rim thickness, weight distribution -???????????Wine Structure (Balance): How the glass design brings balance between acid, tannins, sweetness and texture of the range of wines -???????????Wine Aromatics Nose (Intensity): Study of the impact aromas being displayed in the glass, such as Thiols, Esters, Terpenes and Oak Lactones -???????????Wine Flavours (Clarity): Deep dive into the precision of sub-aromas within the impact aromas, for example rose oxide (Gewuerztraminer), and linalool (Muscat) within the Terpenes family. The team worked with the glass artisans from Kvetna 1794 throughout the glass mould fabrication process to produce multiple sample pieces. Happy Tuesday! Wine of the Week: Leeuwin Estate Art Series Shiraz 2020 from Margaret River, Western Australia. This wine showcases the elegance that Shiraz can achieve in cooler climate regions of Australia. Margaret River, despite producing only 3% of Australia's wine, accounts for over 20% of its premium market. Its Mediterranean climate (think Rh?ne valley) and iron-rich gravel soils contribute to wines of exceptional quality and aging potential. Margaret River's maritime climate allows for more restrained, spice-driven Shiraz with bright acidity. Many associate Australian Shiraz solely with bold, jammy styles from warmer regions, because of mass produced examples we see peppered all across the supermarket shelves. Leeuwin Estate, founded in 1974, is one of Margaret River's pioneering wineries. While best known for their stellar oaky Chardonnays, their Shiraz shouldn't be overlooked. The Art Series label reflects Leeuwin's commitment to the arts, featuring works by leading Australian contemporary artists, so not only are we getting good wine, we get to support local artists! Shiraz often shows notes of black pepper, dark berries, and sometimes hints of eucalyptus - a hallmark of many Australian wines due to the prevalence of eucalyptus trees, like with Lavender with wines from the Rh?ne or Provence. However, with a deep ruby colour, The bouquet opens with intense aromas of ripe blackberries and dark cherries, complemented by delicate notes of violet and white pepper. As the wine opens up and reveals notes of cedar & tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, the wine displays a harmonious balance between fruit concentration and elegant structure. The initial burst of black fruit flavors - blackcurrant and plum - is layered with savory notes of black olive and dried herbs. Long and persistent finish, with fruit flavors slowly giving way to spice and earthy undertones. The tannins are present but well-integrated. While enjoyable now, this wine has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over the next 8-10 years. The wine's balance of fruit, spice, and structure would pair wonderfully with herb-crusted rack of lamb, grilled venison, or a wild mushroom risotto. (SorryNotSorry for delivering this dad joke) For this second post, I want to talk about Casa Mariol Winery and their iconic Vermut Negre, a product that perfectly combines their unique approach to winemaking and design. For those unfamiliar, vermut is a fortified wine—usually white—flavored with herbs and spices, balancing sweet and bitter notes. In Spanish Mediterranean culture, ??'???????? ?????? ???????????? (Vermouth Hour) is a classic tradition, where friends gather ???????????? ?????????? to sip vermut and snack on olives, chips, or anchovies. In recent years, vermut has made a big comeback in Spain, and (Hot Take Alert) I think Casa Mariol helped make it happen. In 2010, the Barcelona-based studio Bendita Gloria, founded by Alba Rosell and Santi Fuster, revolutionized wine label design and branding for the winery Casa Mariol with an innovative approach that was even criticized at the time as "anti-design." Drawing inspiration from ???????? ?????? and the vernacular aesthetics born from the democratization of self-publishing and office tools like Microsoft Office, the design embraced the same simplicity and authenticity that defines the winery's agricultural production model. I truly believe that this bold rebranding wasn’t just a win for Casa Mariol—as I mentioned, it also made waves in the design world, showing how simplicity and authenticity can break through industry norms. To me, Casa Mariol’s Vermut Negre is a great example of how tradition and innovation can come together, influencing not just a product, but the culture surrounding it. ?? How did oak aging become so fundamental to the identity of Rioja wines? ??? On the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, you’ll hear the stories and tips that answer those questions in part two of our chat with Adam Lechmere, editor of The Smart Traveler's Wine Guide to Rioja among other books in this series. https://lnkd.in/gzcpQvyg ??? As Adam explains, Rioja wines are categorized according to the time they spend aging in oak barrels. ?? Spain had strong trading links with America so it was cheaper to ship American oak to Rioja than to import French oak. ?? Winemakers used it for economic reasons rather than for stylistic ones, though of course, over time, it became stylistic. ?? American oak is particularly well suited for the country’s flagship red grape Tempranillo because it has a slightly wider grain than French oak, so it imparts more flavors. ?? What’s driving the resurgence of traditional aging methods, such as concrete tanks? ?? Adam says that it's driven by changing global trends in wine styles. ?? It's also that Rioja winemakers are forward-looking in their experimentation because they're such pioneers. ?? How does Rioja wine style change in a vintage characterized as an Atlantic year versus a Mediterranean year? ?? Adam observes that you'll find more opulence, more generosity in a Mediterranean year versus Atlantic-influenced years are more precise, slightly less opulent. ?? These differences can be very subtle but noticeable. ??? How has Rioja's famous architecture impacted tourism and the international perception of Rioja wines? ??♂? Adam notes that Rioja's architecture has been so famous for so long now that it’s hard to know whether tourists visit primarily because of the architecture or the wine. ??
