I'm deeply saddened by the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in the southern Appalachians. The loss of lives and destruction of homes and entire communities is truly heartbreaking. As we come together to support flood victims, remember that every gesture of kindness and compassion can make a difference. For those looking to help, a list of organizations aiding in the recovery efforts can be found here: [Link to organizations aiding in Hurricane Helene recovery efforts](https://lnkd.in/euUX38Uf). And here are some essential reminders for those who want to assist: ??Volunteering: Sign up with a reputable organization and never go to a disaster area alone. ?? Donations: Financial support is crucial as it allows for the purchase of supplies and services needed most urgently. ?? Supplies: Contact organizations beforehand to determine what, how much, and when supplies are needed. Severe natural disasters are having an increasingly profound impact across Appalachians communities. Together, we can support these communities as they rebuild and improve resilience by restoring the natural systems that help mitigate the most serious impacts of a changing climate.

Friends - please don't just move on to the next news story. Hurricane Helene has absolutely devastated western North Carolina. Because this storm didn't hit a major US city, it's not getting the same coverage as many prior hurricanes. But for western North Carolina, Helene brought 500-year floods and utter devastation. Entire towns remain cut off from the "mainland" due to flooding and the complete destruction of roadways. Not only are volunteer pilots bringing in supplies and water by helicopter and small plane, but they are now using mules to reach the most vulnerable areas. 18 water systems are completely offline, affecting almost 200,000 people. That means a lack of fresh water for almost five full days at this point. Another 225,000 people are served by water systems operating on backup power, some of which are at less that full capacity. (Source: Business North Carolina.) Asheville Mission Health Hospital is bringing in 20 trucks of water per day just for hospital needs. This is a humanitarian crisis for our neighbors. Research tells us that philanthropic dollars are not distributed across the country by relative population. Rather, philanthropic dollars are disproportionately distributed to our larger cities and population centers. Now is the time to fly in the face of that data. PLEASE, if you are of the ability to donate, help our neighbors by doing so. If you're not sure where to look, here's information on the specific disaster relief fund being run by the North Carolina Community Foundation: https://lnkd.in/eaZPDbiA

Hurricane Helene has wrecked the South East United States. From FL and GA to SC, NC, and beyond, this storm will forever be remembered as one of the most deadly in our country's history. Hurricanes affect beach communities, not mountain communities. This isn't supposed to happen in the mountains to cities like Asheville, NC. Except, perhaps, once every 1000 years. That's what Asheville, NC and surrounding communities now face, that 1 in a 1000 year event. Roads washed away. Entire towns like Chimney Rock, NC swept off the mountainside. Residents left with nothing - no power, no cell service, no water, dwindling food. This is personal. Members of Cattie & Gonzalez can tell you stories of years past when hurricanes have altered our lives. Victims have endured devastating losses, primarily by people lacking the means to rebuild. For some, they will be starting life all over again from square one. This GoFundMe is an attempt to help.?As citizens of the United States, we are resilient and steadfast in our desire to help others in the face of overwhelming adversity. Now, more than ever, our strength lies in our solidarity, our fortitude, and our willingness to help one another when facing a time of need. When our neighbors need help, we lend a helping hand. It's what we do. Cattie & Gonzalez wants to help! We will donate all proceeds received to the?NC Disaster Relief Fund. Donations made to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund will go to nonprofits working to meet the immediate needs of storm victims such as food and water, cleaning supplies and other emergency supplies. #HurricaneHelene #NorthCarolina #GoFundMe https://lnkd.in/emcB3JBa

As Hurricane Helene barrels toward the Florida Panhandle, the American Red Cross is working closely with partners and officials across Florida and Georgia to finalize response plans and urges everyone to make their storm preparations now. ??The Red Cross is rapidly mobilizing some 360 trained disaster workers - including several from #WNY, truckloads of supplies and dozens of shelters to help people in Florida and Georgia in the face of Helene. ?? Red Crossers are preparing dozens of evacuation shelters along the Florida Panhandle. More shelter teams are on stand-by in case they are needed. In addition to trailers of disaster supplies pre-positioned earlier this year, the Red Cross is preparing some 30,000 snacks and 15,000 ready-to-eat meals, as well as emergency response vehicles. ??Find evacuation shelters at RedCross.org, download the free Red Cross Emergency app or call 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767). ??You can also help support communities facing potentially life-threatening impacts by making a financial donation, or an appointment to donate blood or platelets by visiting RedCross.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767). #HurricaneHelene #RedCross #DisasterRelief #BloodDonation #Volunteer

Hurricane Helene has devastated the WNC and other areas. Asheville and Buncombe County will most likely be without potable running water for weeks to come. There are still more rural locations that cannot be accessed to assess damage and needs. Local, county, state, and national resources have stated a lot of "We don't know's" regarding timelines for resource distribution and repairs. The large scale bureaucratic processes can be barriers for many residents and don't always address the needs we are seeing on the ground. I am working with mutual aid groups to help import and distribute supplies. I am connected to a group of local and outside therapists that are offering services to those affected. There is so much support in the area within communities. Small groups are doing so much. If you want to help, please consider donating to mutual aid networks and individuals. If you want suggestions, let me know. The biggest thing that people outside the region should understand is that this recovery process will take a long time--months, years even. When the national news cycle has forgotten about the event and moved on to more "shiny, shiny" things, the people here will still be struggling with the effects of this. Don't forget about us all here, because we won't be able to.
