What is CDBG, and who does it benefit? ?? The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) is a grant program administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that provides resources to state and local governments and their local partners to fund a wide range of community development projects, principally for low-and moderate-income people. Most funds are dedicated to a mixture of large, mid-size and somewhat smaller localities (70%) while states receive remaining funds (30%) to serve rural communities. CDBG program funds can be used for a host of activities that include: ? Infrastructure (public facilities and improvements) ? Affordable housing ? Economic development ? What are some actionable ways we can improve America's housing situation for all? Like many issues, it will take a combination of approaches: ? Develop programs that focus on the "missing middle", or families who earn 80% to 100% of the area median income. By preserving housing with rents that fall in between traditional affordable and market-rate housing (without the use of subsidies), we can strengthen the middle class. ? Support community development financial institutions to empower the development of affordable community housing, create jobs, and uplift historically underserved areas. ? Foster more public-private partnerships. Without these partnerships, the affordable housing we have today would simply not exist. Important Update for Community Development The Senate Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Subcommittee has approved $354 million for the Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund as part of the Fiscal Year 2025 Appropriations Bill. This represents a crucial $30 million increase from last year, aimed at supporting underserved communities nationwide. Additionally, $40 million has been allocated to the Bank Enterprise Award (BEA) program, which effectively channels resources to the most distressed communities and supports small CDFI banks.
