Today is "Why I love my RPM Career" as we kick off #RPMCareersWeek I have a somewhat unique viewpoint on this, as I'm lucky enough to have spent significant time in Property Management and on the Supplier side. My career began 14 1/2 years ago when I applied for a role as a "Resident Services Coordinator" at the apartment community where I lived in Washington DC. I was new to DC, working in retail as a Store Manager, and needed to find a way to cut my biggest expense - rent. When this opportunity presented itself, I jumped for it. Never in my wildest imaginations did I anticipate the ride I'd have. In those 14 1/2 years, I've worked in many different capacities. On the Property Management side I've worked as a Resident Services Coordinator (a concierge), a Lead Resident Services Coordinator (concierge supervisor), a leasing agent, an Assistant Property Manager, a Property Manager, a Multi-site Manager and a Regional Manager. On the supplier side, I've worked as a Sales Executive, a Regional Account Manager, a District Sales Manager, a Senior National Account Manager and a Vice President of Sales. When I think about this industry, the things that I love are vast. To name a few: 1. The people. I have made so many lifelong friends in this industry. There are people that I've never even met that I consider friends. I don't believe this exists in many other industries. 2. The career opportunities and upward mobility. I listed my career trajectory above, not for any other reason than to highlight what one can accomplish in a relatively short period of time. I did not have a college degree until 6 months ago so I, and many others, have been able to accomplish a lot through hard work, determination and grit. 3. The difference. I love the fact that I feel that I'm making a difference in peoples lives. Working in property management, my impact was likely greater given my direct involvement in the day-to-day lives of residents. Still to this day, I help make a difference by providing easy access to finding your next community. Residents are the life blood of this industry and I am very aware of the impact that we have on their lives each and every day. "Today is my first day on the job. They don't tell us anything. They just put us out here." ? So said the door-to-door salesperson after only 45 seconds of conversation and two basic questions. Sweating in the afternoon Florida sun, walking, knocking, pleading, trying to find residents, any resident, willing to listen, let alone sign up. ? Two months ago, the corporate brand, with its heavy machinery and sprawling crews, had swept through the neighborhood installing buried fiber optic lines. Then all was quiet for about eight weeks. Suddenly every day now brings a door knock, twice a day on the weekend. There are several observations to me made. I choose to consider the plight of the frontliner and the wonderfully universal statement, "Today is my first day on the job. They don't tell us anything. They just put us out here." When I was researching the idea for what became Worksmith, I reached out to 100 folks on LinkedIn with titles that included VP of Retail Stores, VP of Retail Operations, Head of Facilities Maintenance and Head of Procurement. After all of the conversations that I had as a result of that outreach, I came away with three big learnings: 1. Big markets create big opportunities…

3 years ago on this very day I was graced with an opportunity by Andrew Blythe & Sam G who took a gamble on hiring me. By no means was it the smoothest transition into my new found career, but they stuck by me & hopefully it has paid them dividends. Here’s a small recap on my journey… - 16th January 2021 - Began teaching myself?? residential property (6pm - midnight daily) - 9th February 2021 - Quit job - 15th February 2021 - Hired at STOREYS - 16th February 2021 - 1st Day at STOREYS 36 Months in 3 years 156 Weeks in 3 years 144 Working weeks in 3 years (Mon - Fri) 783 Working days in 3 years (Mon - Fri) 470 Total deals in 3 years?? 3.25 deals per week average over 3 years 13 deals per month average over 3 years 156 deals per year average over 3 years Real Estate degree ? >> Negative… - Junior Lettings Negotiator ? - Senior Lettings Negotiator ? - Head Lettings Negotiator ? Success thus far ? Yes & no… Everyone’s perception of success varies depending on the individual. For me personally, “yes” in the sense of I have found my passion, a career at STOREYS that I thoroughly love and enjoy. Vast majority of people tend to despise their jobs, but feel obligated to stick at it solely due to their pay packets they receive at the end of each month. On the other hand “no”, reason being I feel I haven’t even scratched the surface in terms of what I want to achieve in the industry. I am just getting started. Like anything, patience & consistency is everything. There is an ungodly amount of industry knowledge I wish to continue to learn, enabling me to develop and broaden my skillset that will take me to new heights. New & different goals this year ??.
