She may not wear a uniform, but she’s got my six every single day. When I was in the Army, I learned that trust isn’t just given—it’s built. Your team, your squad, your battle buddies… they’re the ones who keep you safe, who make sure you don’t get left behind. They have your six, no questions asked. I never imagined back then that I’d find that same kind of trust in a four-legged teammate. Hannah, my guide dog, isn’t just my eyes—she’s my wing(wo)man. She moves with me through the world, sensing obstacles I can’t see, guiding me safely across streets, through crowded spaces, even over ice and uneven trails. Like any great teammate, she reads my body language, anticipates my movements, and stays steady even when I get frustrated or thrown off course. And just like in the military, our bond is built on mutual trust—she relies on me as much as I rely on her. That’s one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned—whether in uniform or as a legally blind veteran—none of us do this alone. We all need a tribe. That’s what “Mission, Tribe & Grace” is about. It’s about the unshakable bonds we build, the ways we show up for each other, and how veterans can turn their experiences into leadership and change—not just for themselves, but for their communities. My book comes out on April 10, National Siblings Day, a day that reminds me of the lifelong connections veterans share, whether we served together or not. In 2012 Josh Honsberger and I were on a patrol and 2 of us started getting shot at. (I know right, annoying) without missing a beat he grabbed his 60 and started dropping mortars so that me and our SARC could get to cover, run up a hill and send some much needed retribution their way. So in life, who do you let in your circle? Do the people around you roll up their sleeves when life start sending rounds your way. Or do they just fade into the bushes like a Homer Simpson meme. A friend of mine once told me that it’s liberating when life goes sideways because it will show you who your true tribe is. I never thought of it like this before but it truly is liberating. Surround yourself with people they leave you feeling energized. That after hanging out with them you don’t feel like you need a break from life to recharge. We all know those type of people where you just feel exhausted after being with. Find people that when departing the conversation you are feel like going to kick the day in the teeth and concur the world. These people will grab the mortar tube for you. They will be the ones who roll up their sleeves and either offer empathy or solutions. Audit your circle and then ask yourself. Thankfulness Day 2: Patrol Base Abbate PBA was founded by Marine Corps LtCol Thomas Schueman after realizing that a large portion of veteran service organizations have qualifiers on their membership. For instance, some require you’ve deployed. Others require you’ve been in the Marine Corps. Others require you’ve serve in SOF. With these barriers to entry, those who haven’t seen combat or deployed are often barred from entry. With non-combat #veterans 68 percent more likely to commit suicide, Tom dedicated himself to creating an organization that would be open to all - regardless of branch or combat experience or MOS or rank. PBA is structured around two primary “club” concepts - geographic and affinity. For instance, if you’re in #Texas, I’d encourage you to join the Houston or San Antonio Clubs, as they are always offering ways for veterans to gather together. Additionally, there are interest clubs - everything from fight club to book club to dive club. In what shouldn’t be a shock, I am a member of hunt club and had the opportunity to visit the Patrol Base in Thompson Falls, Montana, in April. It was a beautiful place to rest and refit, ready to return home to continue to serve.
