Senior executives are generally good people, so they should be themselves when interacting on social media or meeting journalists. At least, that's my view. Let's be honest, there are some execs and CEOs that have been media trained into becoming boring. The fear of the risk of making a mistake means they are just dull. And it is just so obvious. How does PR maintain its role of counselling organisations on how to use media to engage when the media influencers of the moment are using maverick tactics to reach their audiences? Logical argument is not reaching people the way emotive soundbites are. Should corporations follow this path or leave it to political parties and those seeking power / influence?
This is terrible -- though unsurprising -- news for public relations people. Earned media is now worth less, and the temptation to manipulate social media is great, potentially leading to destruction of brand value. Do we have strong enough guardrails?
