Early in my job search, I was offered a role booking bands and musical acts for weddings, corporate events, festivals and nightlife. I had been looking for a career path for months, and this particular company was offering $10 an hour plus commission (with room for growth) for this full-time role, and although that was much lower than I expected, I was excited to learn that part of the business. That is, until they put an Non-Compete on the table in front of me, and told me there would be a 6-month “trial period” before commissions started. To make matters worse, that Non-Compete stated that, should I leave OR be eliminated from the role, I would not be permitted to pursue ANY event industry role that involved selecting entertainment…for 5 years and within a 500 mile radius of Philadelphia. I’m thankful for Bob Kieserman - a professor at Arcadia and my first event client -who helped me see through the promise of “a job in events” and explained the reality of this absurd agreement. I declined the job and, although it would be 6 more months of juggling half a dozen part-time jobs before I found my first events role, I had once again learned a valuable #jobsearch lesson I didn’t forget. Now, the law challenges non-compete agreements, but those who are still searching: make sure you read every single line of every single form during the interview and onboarding process before signing! You never know if predatory tactics are hidden in those documents. And: if something feels wrong in your gut, listen to that feeling! #millennial #careerjourney

?? Name Fraser (he/him) ?? Job Role Event Controller, Logger, Audience Manager and Office Support ? How long have you been with Select? Almost two years! ?? Tell us about your career path. I started working at events and gigs in college, before heading to university to do music business. From there I started freelancing at festivals doing various jobs in production and in the BoH artist world. I met Terri whilst working at Country-to-Country at the O2 in London, where they then invited me to work for Select! Since then, I’ve taken on various other roles such as working in control as a logger and controller, volunteer supervisor and on the ground in audience management roles. I recently started working in the office which has been super eye opening, and I’m excited to see what happens next! ?? What do you love most about what you do? Everything to be honest. Working in events I believe I have the absolute best job in the world. There’s variety to every job, you get to meet fantastic people and travel to loads of different places. Everyday is new, fresh, and exciting. ?? What has been your favourite event to work during your time with Select? I really enjoyed working at British Summer Time in 2022. It was super fun to combine my production knowledge with a new skill. Whilst it was a proper baptism of fire in the control room, it was the most learning I’d ever done on an event. Seeing the crowd dynamics change and new problems arrive each day was a great challenge. ?? If you could swap roles with anyone else on the team for a day, who would it be and why? Terri! I’m always impressed by the amount of work they do on event days as a control room manager, looking after big groups of people, multiple radio channels and often an itinerary hundreds of rows long. Yet they always keep calm and composed. When I’m more experienced, I’d love to take on that kind of challenge. ?? What's a skill or area of expertise you'd like to develop further in the coming year? With my new role, I’m hoping to pick up a whole host of new skills in operations and admin. But I’m most looking forward to completing my level 5 crowd management qualification. I always enjoy furthering my education and then putting new knowledge to the test on the ground. ?? If you could give someone who is starting a career in crowd management a snippet of advice, what would it be? Listen, listen, and then listen some more. The people you work with on the ground have an incredible amount of invaluable experience. Take their advice and see if you can improve upon your own practices. Also don’t be afraid to ask for a second opinion or for help! It’s a team effort and we’re making decisions which often have a massive impact on the event.

???? What is an 'Ops Manager' ? ???? I have fulfilled this role many times and the range of responsibilities you can have from job to job is so broad! It is one of the reasons why I love the job! If we are talking music festivals I think you have your big 4 ?? Security ?? Traffic ?? Medical ?? Health and Safety These are YOUR people, you get the joy of learning from them for their specialist expertise while curating a cohesive event management plan which works to knit these separate contractors together Then you have the ying to the yang of ops, the wonderful site team who build and maintain what is a small city so that you can bring in a team to run the gig ??? From there, you have masses of other elements to consider and haul into one cohesive plan... Welfare ?? Accreditation ?? Fire ?? Control ?? Transport ?? Ticketing ?? Comms ?? Licensing ?? Staffing ??♀? Gates ? Behind The Scene: Another fantastic day spent creating content at Marriott International's Al Messila, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Doha. People often ask me, 'How do you handle it all alone?' And while I shoot, edit and post all the content at the resort, I prefer saying, I don't do it alone! I'm fortunate to work with an amazing team of associates who turn each shoot into an incredible collaboration- starting with a big shout out to my Director of Marketing, Leila Aliyeva whose vision has helped shaped the direction of my content creation journey with this property under The Luxury Collection. Given my filmmaking background, it's fascinating to see how my fellow associates seamlessly take on various film roles during our shoots. There's an unspoken art director in a restaurant manager, a natural-born production assistant in a spa supervisor, and team members from the engineering department, who effortlessly become 'sparks' by assisting with extension cables for my lights. I couldn’t help but smile once when I saw an F&B associate turn into a continuity supervisor while ensuring the perfect placement of a spoon in a matching shot. Mainly, I must highlight the incredible efforts of Leila Aliyeva and my colleague Ingga Alifa during our shoots who in the spirit of teamwork, under the scorching sun, would even play the vital role of holding reflectors if a shot demanded it. It's safe to say that I work with a full-fledged film crew - even if they may not be fully aware of it! ??Every member brings their unique talents and skills, contributing to the cinematic magic we create together every week here at Al Messila. It's about showcasing the product's effectiveness, not perpetuating stereotypes. However, there's indeed an intriguing learning curve in how we communicate these messages. In the wellness industry, for instance, the prevailing imagery often includes people practicing yoga, or those with conventionally beautiful bodies receiving a massage. But true wellness is about reflecting a state of balance, serenity, calm, and joy, which can be embodied by any individual, regardless of their body type. Your observation is a critical reminder that while we often discuss equality in terms of salary, benefits, and career opportunities, we must also be mindful of how we portray and perceive potential employees. Skills and experience should always take precedence over one's physical appearance, color, race, religion, sexual orientation, and other personal attributes. I can still picture this visual so clearly… 14 years ago my parents dropped me at the LAX terminal, smoking a ciggy, with a one way ticket, one suitcase and approx $300 in my bank account…..I was headed to New York City with one goal in mind…to “make it.” I didn’t have a place to live yet and had a freelance event planning job for luxury hotels. I quickly knew I would need to find a more stable option so I went back to my roots of hotel operations. From Park Ave to SoHo, Gramercy and Meatpacking - I worked at some of the worlds most coveted hotels. I climbed the ladder being one of the few young women to excel in a male dominated industry. This time of year always gives me an opportunity to look back at those years with gratitude. So many amazing people (you know who you are!) stepped in to take care of me, guide me and encourage me. I wouldn’t be who I am without those experiences AND I’m so glad I’ve completely evolved from those days too (and kicked the ciggy’s too ;) Everything I’ve ever desired, I’ve manifested. I’ve set intentions and taken aligned action. Taking a deep breath and feeling into all the impactful moments that have brought me to the present moment. People often see just the current stage and forget the path you’ve walked. At 15, I started earning €1 per hour helping out at an insurance company. So, what changed? I’ve navigated through various roles: ? Housekeeping: I hated it with all my heart. ? Distributing Fliers: Learned patience. ? Bartending: The best way to improve my English. ? Swimming Teacher: Teaching something I spent hours mastering. ?. Waitress: I got fired as I was not smiling enough. ? Personal Trainer: Making my hobby my work (not recommended). ? Call Center: Fired because I couldn’t sell anything over the phone. ? Post Office: Offered a permanent position after summer. ? Hostess: Good rate for a weekend job during studies. ? Administration: Learned organization and automation of repetitive tasks. ? Testing Hearing Aids and Ventilation: Earned while studying or sleeping. ? Engineer: Changing careers to IT was quite a challenge. ? Consultant: Learned how to help others. ? Independent Contractor: Learned to run a small, but my own business. ? Teacher: You need to understand something well before spreading knowledge. ? Event Organizer: Bringing people the best value. ? Investor: Making my money work for me. I’ve also worked and studied in various countries: ? England ? Belgium ? Poland ? Denmark ? Greece ? Romania ? China Reaching a certain point takes time and experience. There are no shortcuts, but be open and try different things. Some stuff will work, and some stuff will teach you something. Embrace the journey!

Reflecting on the profound impact of everyday interactions. Years ago, as a front desk manager at a newly opened resort, a simple act of kindness led to a life-changing moment. A woman with her infant son approached me, asking to see a guest room. Little did I know, she was the Associate Director in our company’s regional sales office, who would soon be returning to work from maternity leave. Since the resort had opened during her leave, she hadn't been able to attend the resort tours for her team. I felt compelled to give her a full tour, and we ended up spending over an hour exploring the resort together. Her gratitude was overwhelming at the end of our impromptu tour. Months later, after she had returned to work, she approached me at the desk. Remembering our earlier encounter, she thanked me again for the tour, but then asked me a surprising question: had I ever considered a career in group sales? That moment marked the beginning of an incredible journey. A short while later she became the Director of Sales in our regional sales office, and after working in that office as a Group Sales Manager for a few years, I advanced to Associate Director of Sales. Our office became a tight-knit team, many of whom I still call friends today. She remains my mentor, and though our paths diverged as we took on different leadership roles (and eventually we both chose to go back into individual contributor roles to focus more on our families), I will always cherish the years we worked together as some of the best in my career. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: you never know where your next interaction could take you. I have noticed this ad for a job opening recently and, while I like the layout, picture, color scheme etc, I feel there is something wrong here. Why are we using pictures of beautiful people when looking for staff? What if I don't look like this young lady in the picture but I have the skills and experience because I worked very hard in my life to acquire them? Why another employer/hotel can give me the opportunity and this no? We are often talking about equality in salary, benefits, career progression and job opportunities, but why am I possibly being judged based on my body, color, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc, etc?
