The Power of Citizen Science and Community Action In a recent article in Springer Nature Group entrepreneur and community scientist Robyn Elman shared her inspiring work with monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus). By raising thousands of monarchs from eggs that would otherwise be destroyed by lawnmowers, she dedicates around six hours a day, seven days a week, from July through September. Elman also tags some butterflies to monitor their migration to Mexico and collaborates with New York’s Department of Transportation to protect these vital habitats. This example highlights why the Community of Guardians of Guardians (CoGs), is so important. At CoGs, we provide a platform where people can learn about and engage in citizen science initiatives, collaborating with the science community to tackle big problems and make our world more sustainable. Citizen science is a powerful tool for conservation and sustainability. It empowers individuals to contribute to scientific research and environmental protection, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility. By bringing together passionate individuals like Robyn Elman, CoGs amplifies their efforts and creates a collective impact. Through our work, we aim to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in this case SDG 15: Life on Land. This involves protecting, restoring, and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, managing forests sustainably, combating desertification, and halting biodiversity loss. At CoGs, we believe that the voice of science and the power of community can drive meaningful change across the 17 SDGs. By raising awareness of citizen science initiatives and providing a collaborative space, we help bridge the gap between scientific discovery and practical action. Hello Molly, Are you aware of the Emissions issues from the Eco Vista Waste Management Property at 2210 Waste Management Drive, Springdale Arkansas? This same property includes the Birdsong Wildlife Sanctuary of NWA but continues to petition to expand the landfill area, while Emitting Vapors that, I feel, killed over 100 birds in the same area a couple years back. Arkansas Game and Fish commission tested the birds and stated they died of Chocolate poisoning. In Test Documents from CETH, 5 Chemicals WERE identified to be exceeding the EPA RSL Limits. 2 of these were extremely over limit and are Acrolein and Benzene. Acrolene: RSL = 0.021 ug/mg Sample Range Identified = 0.17 - 0.48 ug/mg Benzene: RSL = 0.36 ug/mg Sample Range Identified = 0.36 - 1.1 ug/mg Carbon Tetrachloride: RSL = 0.47 ug/mg Sample Range Identified = 0.47 - 0.50 ug/mg Chloroform; RSL = 0.12 ug/mg Sample Range Identified = 0.25 - 0.26 ug/mg Naphthalene: RSL = 0.083 ug/mg Sample Range Identified = 0 - 0.86 ug/mg I had to cut the post down quite a bit, so if you want to discuss, Please reach out.

A win for community organising and the arid lands - Buffel grass has been declared a weed across the Northern Territory! Buffel grass is a major threat to biodiversity, transforming landscapes and altering fire regimes. This landmark decision is the result of decades of relentless advocacy and community organizing. It’s time for Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count! The annual UK-wide butterfly survey started on 12 July and taking part doesn’t just help us learn more about how some of our favourite species are faring – it also benefits us humans too! ?? Counting butterflies is good for you! ?? Butterfly Conservation teamed up with researchers from the University of Derby to find out how taking part in the Big Butterfly Count can help our wellbeing.?? They discovered that just 15 minutes spent observing and counting butterflies boosts feelings of connectedness with nature, while feelings of anxiety can be reduced by almost 10%.?? How connected we feel to nature is correlated to how motivated we are to protect it. Therefore, the findings of this new study show that citizen science projects like Big Butterfly Count could play a vital role in nature’s recovery.?? ?? How much do you know about Little Owl? They're cute, they’re small, they’re fluffy. They are also an indicator of healthy ecosystems. Adorably, little owls want to be our neighbors, and find the most comfort near human settlements! They are what’s called a ‘synanthropic species,’ which means they thrive best close to human settlements rather than in complete wilderness. Or to be more precise: they need the right blend of human settlement and natural diversity. But guess what? They are being driven out of their homes by human activity. Their nesting sites are under threat from farming, pesticide use, big agriculture, ground clearance, and various other human interventions. This has resulted in their decline on the European mainland, putting them on the Species of European Conservation Concern. That's why last year, we installed 25 nesting boxes to help bring the owls to a self-sustaining population in an area close to Berlin. The result: more than half were occupied by owl families, making it a huge success! But the work is not over, and this year, we’re going back to support our feathered friends and bring even more funding. Stay tuned for our next mission. Curious about last year’s mission? Join WA Landcare Network Inc and its special guests to discuss how best to tackle the seemingly insurmountable burden of introduced weeds in a bushland reserve. Many Friends of Reserve Groups are daunted by the sheer number of?weeds in their local patch, and could use a bit of guidance about how to prioritise and plan an effective weed control program.?This is a chance to raise your weed control issues in a forum of like minded people and to hear from others about their challenges and their strategies.?
