Some reflections on the brilliant day that was the #khpconference24. A huge thank you to the amazing speakers and chairs - so many powerful stories and an overall message of hope and humanity (put so well by Ms (Dr) Rantimi Ayodele). As well as showcasing some of the brilliant people and work across the King's Health Partners community, there’s much learning to take from the day. It was a privilege (and personal career highlight!) to share the stage for the opening session with The Hon. Julia Gillard AC, whose messages on leadership and clarity of purpose resonated so strongly.??Julia's conversation with the new King's Health Partners Executive Director Graham Lord set the perfect tone for the day and was a great way to kick off our health and life sciences policy work in collaboration with The Policy Institute. My main takeaways from the session as we co-create the King’s Health Partners 2030 strategy: > Real reform requires collaborative leadership, partnership and space to think – how can being part of the King's Health Partners community support people to do this together? > Remaining clear on our purpose and impact - to pioneer better health for all. How do we share and learn from the benefits that academic health partnerships can bring to the health and care system, focussing on meeting the needs of the people and communities we serve? > Ensuring action – what will have changed in a year as a consequence of our discussion? Associations Retention isn’t a task…it’s a commitment It’s a long-term commitment to keep members engaged. Reaching out only at renewal doesn’t build loyalty. Imagine a member feels disconnected. Your team notices only when it’s time to renew. You send a standard message: “Renew today to keep your benefits.” It falls flat. The member feels like just another number. Psychologically, people stay where they feel valued. If members feel ignored until renewal, they’re unlikely to stay. A better approach? Engage them before renewal is even a thought. Reach out with something relevant to their interests. For example, “We saw you’ve attended sessions on [topic]. Here’s a resource we think you’d enjoy.” This shows you’re paying attention. You’re building a relationship, not a transaction. The shift here? Retention isn’t a single reminder. It’s consistent, meaningful engagement throughout the year. Make members feel like part of something valuable. My heart is filled with gratitude this morning as I put the finishing touches to the workshops I’ll have the pleasure of facilitating to imaging colleagues in the East of England from Monday ?? A healthcare professional of 25 years, I witnessed firsthand how little impact attending training programmes had in implementing meaningful and sustainable change in the various Trusts I worked at. I also noticed the number of management consultants who came and went and recommended ‘change measures’, and yet, we carried on doing as we always had as soon as they left! SO MUCH WASTE… ?? waste of precious time ?? waste of tax payers money ?? waste of talent many of my dedicated, bright and resourceful colleagues carried deep inside them Waste was the cause of my biggest frustration and the reason I had to get out and do what I do now. ?? What I’m most passionate about is developing the capabilities of teams and individuals I work with, so THEY can implement successful and sustainable change in their world. However they define their world… and right from the time we start working together to long after I leave them. That’s my measure of success and sustainability. What’s yours?
