Hurricane Beryl is the first of what the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has warned will be an ‘extraordinary’ hurricane season. The North Atlantic could get as many as seven major hurricanes of category three strength or over this year, which would be more than double the usual number, it said. The Systems Approach replaces fumigation with methyl bromide in the United States with a series of mitigation measures at origin that will improve the condition of the fruit for consumers. The approval is a significant win for Chile, which has been in negotiations with the US phytosanitary authorities, to change the current protocol for 25 years. Sarasota Bay is normally a beautiful water body. And it has been cleaner - on average - the last four years than at any time over the prior 15 years. But not now, thanks to Tropical Storm Debby. Working with the great folks at SWFWMD (big shout out to Dr. Chris Anastasiou) we sampled the bay yesterday, and we have analyzed our field parameter data already. We’re expecting salinity stratification and bottom water hypoxia to kill most of the benthic communities in much of the lower bay. This will be adding to the mess of sewage overflows (multiple tens of million of gallons) grass clippings, dog poop, and other debris that has washed into our bay this week. Also, let’s stop talking about “one in a thousand year storms” ok? We only have 50 to 100 years of rainfall data, and rainfall is clearly changing the last 20 years or so. Debby was the second “one-hundred year” rain event since 2022, as described in our most recent Director’s Note. Two months ago, we had the most intense hourly rain event in over 50 years. It appears that rainfall datasets from the 20th Century might not be that useful for predicting rainfall in the 21st Century. So, it would seem these are the kind of events we better get used to. In fact, Florida’s in the cone of influence for Ernesto, if he strengthens as expected. Yay…
