This is absolutely correct. As a management consultant I would always start by listening and learning before I came to any conclusions or declaring opinions. Sadly this can’t be said of many board and CEO appointments I have witnessed. They often feel the need to justify their position with immediate action, instead of starting by quietly taking stock.

"Don’t show up to prove; show up to improve," emphasizes a mindset shift that can transform how we approach both personal and professional growth. Rather than attending events, meetings, or conversations with the goal of proving ourselves or showcasing our achievements, we should focus on how we can contribute, learn, and grow. This perspective fosters a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration, rather than competition. By prioritizing our own development and the value we bring to others, we create more meaningful and impactful interactions.

I'm sure many of you can relate to the scenario Simon Sinek discusses. It's becoming more common now for companies to take it a step further by putting new hires on a third-party payroll contract for the first 6 months or even a year. While the reasons behind this approach may vary, it undeniably creates a sense of job insecurity that can impact an employee's productivity. Personally, I believe that if a company can't extend trust to the people they hire, it's hard to expect those employees to feel any genuine connection or compassion for the organization.
