???? The Essential Art of Lighting in Film ???? When we discuss cinema's power, we often laud the directors, actors, and scriptwriters. But today, let's shed light on one of the most pivotal yet understated elements of filmmaking – Lighting. Lighting in film is much more than mere illumination. It's a storyteller's brushstroke, a director's eye, and an actor's backdrop. It creates texture, depth, and mood, subtly influencing the emotional tone of each scene. Consider the haunting shadows of a noir film or the radiant glow in a romance – lighting sets the stage for our emotions. It guides our focus, crafts silhouettes, and paints the canvas upon which films are etched. ?? Why Lighting Matters: Mood Creation: From the eerie blue of a moonlit scene to the harsh glare of a desolate landscape, lighting evokes a visceral response. Directionality: It directs the viewer's attention to where the story lives, highlighting characters and pivotal moments. Depth Perception: It adds volume to characters and settings, giving a three-dimensional feel to a two-dimensional medium. Time and Space Definition: Lighting can signify the time of day, change of seasons, or even alter the perceived temperature of a scene. In the symphony that is a film, every aspect plays its part, but lighting is the conductor, orchestrating emotion and meaning in the visual symphony we see on screen. #FilmLighting #Cinematography #Filmmaking #VisualStorytelling #FilmIndustry #SetLife

Design is thinking made visual. - Saul Bass ?? Ever wondered why some designs just click while others fade into the background? The answer often lies in the unseen process of creative direction. Creative direction isn't about adding more elements or flashy effects; it's about distilling ideas to their essence. A great design scratches beneath the surface, connecting with viewers on an emotional level. Whether it's a film's cinematography capturing a moment of vulnerability ?? or a graphic layout guiding the eye intuitively, the intent behind each choice matters. Your creative decisions should serve as silent yet powerful narrators of your story. What’s that one project where simplicity won over complexity for you? Let’s discuss! ??

How Jacinta Leong Helped Build the Wasteland of 'Furiosa' https://ift.tt/z0LGqyZ There are very few opportunities for filmmaking teams to work within the same universe for over a decade, but if you're lucky enough to be part of the Mad Max series from mastermind George Miller, then you've spent a good chunk of your life on the Fury Road. That's the case for art director Jacinta Leong, who worked on both Fury Road and the recent release Furiosa, helping the team design and build those wild vehincles and flesh out the story's key environments. Art directors are the "get stuff done" part of the crew. They help conceptualize and make sure that concept makes it into reality. On the day I spoke with Leong, she was about to head to another set to pour a concrete slab, but she graciously spent time on Zoom talking about Furiosa's fancy new war rig, how the wastelanders source their parts, and more. Strap in for a ride with Leong and Furiosa! FURIOSA : A MAD MAX SAGA | OFFICIAL TRAILER #1 www.youtube.com Editor's note: The following conversation has been edited for length and clarity. No Film School: How did you get into art direction? Jacinta Leong: For as long as I can remember, I think I've been drawn to structure and shape and color. And when I was 6, my parents bought me a set of 24 coloring in pencils. It was a memorable moment. We were also, my sisters and I, we were put into violin and piano lessons, which I think is standard issue for Asian kids. I thought that I would have a career on stage performing, because I enjoyed theater. But my parents, I think they put a spell on us that we would always go to tertiary education, which might be something of that generation, as well. So I was in a play called the King and I. I was quite struck by the set designer and it turns out that the set designer was an architect, and I thought, "Oh, I could do that like she did." I could study architecture, be a theater set designer, but also have that uni degree. So I actually did that. I went to uni and studied architecture, and throughout that course I became more interested in film design than theater design. When I graduated, I started writing to studios and production designers and art directors. This is in the days of writing a letter, putting a stamp on it, putting it in the post box or faxing it. And from there I did get a response or two out of many letters, and started in the industry soon after that. NFS: Furiosa is a return to a world that a lot of us know and love. What elements or settings were you most excited to explore in a new way in this film? Leong: The new environments that were inta were not only the Citadel, which we saw in Fury Road, but we also got to see the other two trading hubs, which were Gastown and the Bullet Farm. So fleshing out that part of the story, that was another exciting and challenging design project within the project. And it was good to see these hubs to get the whole story about bartering in the wa...

What makes a good story? - When telling a story through video, the goal is to get the viewer attached. You want them to feel something. Is it fear, comfort, compassion? We made this ad for the viewer to resonate with the main protagonist by feeling sorrow up until the story takes a turn. It is important to note that the audience is subconsciously FEELING the story which is being told through cinematography, aspect ratio, color grading, and the main point of the video: FASHION - Let us know what you think about this ad for Keiser Clark and if you would like to see how we did it! Co-DP of 'City of Dreams' Trevor Roach Talks Commitment to Craft https://ift.tt/EdW7QZO Written by Trevor Roach The journey a film takes to completion varies from project to project, yet they all require a large amount of time. There’s, of course, the time it takes to develop and produce a film, but also what’s needed for shooting new scenes, pickups, and VFX-heavy post-production. No matter the film, we grow throughout its process, both as artists and as individuals throughout life. There are certain projects that encourage that growth more than others, and City of Dreams, directed by Mohit Ramchandani (Mo), is a perfect example of that. - YouTube www.youtube.com This film took six years from principal photography to theatrical release, where in that time, I was promoted from 2nd Unit DP to Co-Director of Photography. It is a perfect example of not only the persistence and dedication required to often complete a film but also the importance of believing in your story so passionately, as Mo has done here. My involvement in the film began in late 2018, when the cinematographer for the project, Alejandro Chávez, A.M.C., asked me to come on board to be his 2nd Unit DP and ‘B’ camera on the main unit. This was a huge honor and opportunity for me, as I was only a year removed from graduating with my MFA from Chapman University, and this would be the largest production I have been involved in to date. From the very first day of shooting, I quickly had to adapt my operating style to that of what was required for the visual narrative Mo and Alejandro were creating. Mo had practically pre-shot the entire film on his iPhone, which became a pivotal blueprint for how the film was shot. We were predominately handheld, but rather than have the camera from our shoulder to operate, we often were cradling the camera at chest level. This lower-angle perspective helped us see the world from the eyes of our main character, Jesus ( played by Ari Lopez), as we followed his struggle through being trafficked in the city of Los Angeles. Shooting on the Arri Alexa Mini with Zeiss Master Primes - mostly using the 18mm- we needed the camera package to be built as tight as possible in order not to restrict our movements. The nature of the handheld and the freedom to move the camera is juxtaposed with the lack thereof by the individuals in this story, who are being used as slave labor to produce the clothing we purchase regularly. It was used to provide intimacy while also displaying the brutality of the conditions these children were subjected to. A chase sequence through the fashion district of LA required Alejandro and me to often sprint at full speed with the talent, sometimes switching from leading to following mid-take, all the while landing in the appropriate spot for the wipe or transition point in this stitched-together oner. While operating the ‘B’ camera on the main unit, I was also tasked with 2nd Unit work. One of the most exciting...

?? DOPs don't create a mood for the film. Ever found yourself immersed in a film, transported to a specific era simply through its visuals? The magic lies in the art of color grading. ?? Cinematographers lay the foundation, but it's the colorists who weave the mood and era-specific ambiance. From raw, desaturated footage to the final graded masterpiece, the transformation is remarkable. This process is called Digital Intermediate (DI). As the reels (film reels) are sent to the colorist, they embark on a journey to breathe life into each frame. It converts raw footage to Rec. 709, and they paint the canvas with hues that evoke the desired emotions and time periods. Collaboration is key. Cinematographers and colorists work hand in hand, crafting LUTs (Look-Up Tables) even before the shoot begins in some cases. Together, they sculpt the visual narrative, ensuring every frame resonates with the film's essence. In the film "Main Atal Hoon," cinematographer Lawrence Dcunha collaborates with colorist Avinash Jagdish Shukla for the Luts before the shoot begins. Discover the artistry behind color grading with these YouTube channels: Waqas Qazi, Film Riot, Color Grading Central LLC, Luc Forsyth. Join the journey of turning raw footage into cinematic gold. Embrace the power of color. Let your visuals tell the story. ???? Who is your favorite colorist?
