How do changemakers working toward systemic change measure progress in complex, long-term efforts? A new article from The Bridgespan Group argues for a fundamental shift in our measurement mindset, emphasizing the need to "prioritize contribution over attribution" and adapt our methods as work evolves. The article highlights why "durable solutions require a strong foundation and trust in field catalyst leadership," even when immediate results aren't visible. And, perhaps most importantly, it reminds us to "stay in love with the problem, not our solution," underscoring the need for flexibility in our strategies. Drawing from real-world examples of systemic change from tobacco control to marriage equality, the article provides practical advice on measuring progress that could transform how we evaluate and communicate the impact of systems change work.

?? “Imagination is one of the spoils of colonization...claiming who gets to imagine the future for a given geography. Losing our imagination is a symptom of trauma. Reclaiming the right to dream the future, strengthening the muscle to imagine together...is a revolutionary decolonizing activity.” - adrienne marie brown ___ ?? Cohort 4 of the Shifting Power Accelerator has launched!! We face many challenges in changing the systems and culture of the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, but the passion and ambition of this cohort give me great hope! In the first half of the course, we used critical inquiry to explore: ? what liberatory futures could look like ? the power, biases, and assumptions we currently hold, and ? how we can support the transition to a liberatory future where communities have agency over their own lives and destinies. Using a learner-centered approach, we engaged with many course materials, frameworks, and tools. Here are a few open-source materials: ?? I cannot wait to see how this cohort will break down barriers, tackle biases, and move the community-led development agenda forward all while supporting their partners and each other along the way. Today, let's talk about something that has been on my mind lately - the importance of decolonizing narratives and reducing the use of negative stereotypes. In today's world, it's crucial that we acknowledge the impact of colonialism on our society and how it has shaped our understanding of different cultures and communities. By decolonizing narratives, we can challenge the harmful stereotypes that we have come to accept as the norm. Stereotypes have a way of reducing the richness and complexity of cultures into simplistic, often negative, portrayals. This not only limits our understanding but also perpetuates harmful biases. It's time for us to break free from these stereotypes and embrace a more inclusive and diverse perspective. By consciously reducing the use of negative stereotypes, we can create a space where everyone feels valued and respected for who they truly are, rather than being defined by preconceived notions. Let's strive for a society where diversity is celebrated, and everyone's unique stories are given the opportunity to be heard. Let's challenge ourselves to question the narratives we encounter and actively seek out different perspectives. Let's amplify voices that have been marginalized and provide a platform for underrepresented communities to share their experiences and stories. Together, we have the power to reshape the narrative and create a more equitable and inclusive world. Let's work towards a future where our differences are celebrated and stereotypes are left in the past. #DecoloniseNarratives #BreakingStereotypes #InclusionMatters #EmbraceDiversity

Conference Season is upon us. How can we support each other to take one step further? To shift status quo practices? How are you showing up as a #fieldcatalyst? "If you have a foundation that cares about year-over-year deliverables on your key performance indicators, that’s a certain type of work, but that’s not systems change. Systems change doesn’t give a damn about year-over-year progress. Systems change is a longer play that needs funders willing to embrace the complexity of the landscapes they are working in." Erin Ricci, PhD,?Health Care Without Harm Where Do Field Catalysts Come From? Typically, field catalyst leaders are motivated by the realization that a lack of connective tissue coordinating various actors is impeding equitable systems change in their area of work. Before taking on the work of a field catalyst, many of these leaders reported spending 18 months in deep dialogue with other actors in the ecosystem, testing and iterating ideas and priorities while building #networks and #trust in order to identify the precise needs of the field and ways they could meet them. Millions of people cannot do everyday tasks, stream the latest hit TV show, chat with their friends and family abroad, apply for jobs, find the cheapest deals or have an online health appointment because they don't have reliable, affordable, accessible internet access. This is despite the brilliant work of charities and councils, and years of it being a well-known problem. We think a major refresh of digital inclusion policy is needed - and would love you to come and discuss it with us! As a single mom in academia, I was told I cannot use my funding to cover travel costs for my toddler. When will funding agencies understand that not everyone can count on partners and/or parents to do what the job requires? Traveling for work is either a planning nightmare or a financial burden. You can talk about gender equity all you want, but this is barring women from progressing in academia. Full read in link below. https://gofund.me/8f804f06

"There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle... because we do not live single-issue lives." Audre Lorde words, written in 1982, still ring loud and clear today. Anyone doing social impact work needs to recognise the interconnected nature of various forms of discrimination and oppression in order to develop more effective strategies for addressing systemic injustice. Here's where intersectionality comes in This idea of intersectionality- a term coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw helps us understand how different aspects of who we are—like our race, ethnicity, gender and class—overlap, work together and affect our experiences and relationship to power. As a concept, intersectionality is used more and more in non-profit guidance notes, toolkits and across academic research. But it is often a misused term. Intersectionality is not just about noting difference. As Kimberlé Crenshaw explains, its also about taking time to understand where power comes and collides, where it interlocks and intersects AND how?these reasons are connected to historical, social, economic, and legal norms that creates systems where some people have power and others don't. Its about recognising difference, noticing inequities and taking action. We are seeing this play out in real time.. People are marching for justice for Palestine. For Haiti. For the Democratic Republic of Congo and countless other places and injustices. People are connecting the dots between climate crises, colonialism and migrant justice. People are building coalitions to fight multiple injustices. That's why we can't just note difference and call our social impact work intersectional unless we are challenging the unequal distribution of power and privilege and actively working to dismantle systemic oppression This week I will be highlighting eight key principles and concepts that inform Design for Social Impact approach to equity-centred programmes, policies and practices and offering reflective questions to get you thinking about these concepts. To get started.... Consider your community, organization, or the places and people you're involved with. Reflect on your position within them. How does your organization or space relate to the people it aims to represent? In our course, we got deeper into these concepts. Check out the slides below for more reflective questions. I posted links in the comments if you want to check out more resources on this topic. Also, please share any resources/reflections that have helped you apply intersectionality as practice ??
