when the next consultation on your local development plan begins, this is the discussion we all need to be having, not letting profit-led developers sing the tune
Fake nature is no replacement for wild spaces, we have far too few of those to n urban places. Although it's important that developments have more greenspaces, it mustn't be at the expense of nature. Community voices need to be heard and listened too, this resonates with the ongoing battle in #Macclesfield to save the critically important remaining lowland pearlland of #DanesMoss , we also need more genuine neighborhood plans, communities should be involved at all stages in deciding where developments should be and what they should look like not driven by money and developers. Our townscapes and fringe areas are awash with the ugly mediocrity of the majority of overpriced modern developments, people, communities deserve better places to live and above all #nature needs to have a seat at the table and be at the ?? of everything we do. We are slowly, far too slowly waking up to what happens when nature is harmed and planetary boundaries exceeded.Places matter, we need better community led smaller scale developments, communities aren't created by throwing up hundreds, even thousands of shortlife houses with little or no infrastructure and largely car centric. October is National Planning Month! Because great communities don’t just happen—they’re planned. From parks to roads to making sure your neighbor’s backyard doesn’t become a personal racetrack, planning helps create a town we all love living in. Cheers to the unsung heroes who keep our communities thriving and chaos-free (mostly). #nationalplanningmonth #communityplanning #communityplanners #listenengageadvise #plannersaredoers

Butterflies at Butser Hill are set to benefit from funding to improve an area of priority habitat at the Nature Reserve by re-establishing chalk grassland. In all, 27 projects across Sussex and Hampshire will receive a share of just over £1.9m thanks to the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL). In addition to the £1.9m, 29 parish councils across the National Park are sharing more than £313,000 for the benefit of their local community. Cycle path improvements, new toilets, a school extension, wildlife viewing platform and the restoration of a historic walled garden are among the community projects to benefit from this major funding boost. What kinds of projects will the Community Resilience Partnership fund for Maine municipalities? Here's just one example from the City of Lewiston, Maine of how the CRP can help make communities more resilient. Jacqueline Crucet, a neighborhood development planner with Lewiston’s Department of Economic and Community Development spoke with the Press Herald. “Having tree-lined streets is not only beautiful, but cooling and offering habitat to wildlife, as well as shade for pedestrians. We have a lot of pedestrians in our downtown community. The benefits are there. Trees also help with soaking water up, improving our resilience with storms. You just need the right trees in the right places.” (??Gift Article --via the The Portland Press Herald) https://loom.ly/EQsbe6w #Maine #Resilience #ClimateResilience #Community #Infrastructure #Grants #Awardees #Mainecommunities #Lewiston #treestreets #trees #CommunityResiliencePartnership #partnership #community #governor #learnmore #communityresilience #resiliencepartnership #communityaction #grantawards #stateofthestate

?? From Places to "Live" to a Place to Call Home: Michael's Story ?? Meet Michael Olea. For years, he faced the harsh reality of living without a stable home, spending nights in grocery store parking lots with only his car for shelter. It was a life of uncertainty, without the comfort, security, or peace of mind that so many of us take for granted. But today, Mike and his beloved dog live in a beautiful home, and for the first time, it truly feels like just that....home. ?? At Wakeland, we don’t just provide housing—we create communities where residents can thrive. For Mike, this home offers more than just a roof over his head; it’s a place of stability, safety, and belonging, where he’s able to build a hopeful future. Stories like Mike’s remind us why we do this work. Over the past 25 years, we’ve witnessed the transformative power of affordable housing—providing individuals with a sense of community and a foundation to grow. Harley-Davidson Motor Company is the first thing many people think of when they hear #Milwaukee. That's why it's so exciting that Harley has created a new park on its headquarters site with state-of-the-art green stormwater infrastructure (GSI). Working with Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District and CIS, both members of The Water Council, they created a 3.3-acre park able to capture over 225,000 gallons of stormwater during large rain events. "Davidson Park demonstrates how GSI can be employed to go beyond stormwater management requirements and reclaim impervious areas to provide a high level of engagement, community building, education, and GSI visibility," according to a new case study published by the Council of the Great Lakes Region. It also offers access to beautiful new green space in a neighborhood that is lacking it. Learn more on CGLR's website. https://lnkd.in/gfefKiK9 #GreenInfrastructure #WhereWaterWorks #WorldWaterHub

Deer are making themselves at home in urban areas, adapting to city life with surprising ease. While their presence can offer a touch of nature's beauty to city dwellers and assist in managing plant populations, they also pose challenges like damaging gardens and creating traffic hazards. Finding a balance is key, requiring communities to implement strategies like deer management programs and public education to coexist harmoniously with these adaptable creatures. #UrbanWildlife #CityLiving #NatureInTheCity
