Next Thursday, February 29, the World Benchmarking Alliance will launch the next phase of the Collective Impact Coalition for Ethical AI—our multistakeholder engagement campaign targeting 200 of the world's most powerful tech companies, built on data from the Digital Inclusion Benchmark. I couldn't be more excited to announce our keynote speakers and panelists for the #CICforEthicalAI launch: ?? Tara Denham, Director General for Human Rights, Freedoms and Inclusion at Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada ?? Eileen Donahoe JD, Ph.D, Special Envoy?and Coordinator for Digital Freedom at the U.S. Department of State ?? Benjamin Chekroun, Lead Stewardship Analyst at Candriam ?? Michela Gregory, Director of ESG Services at NEI Investments ?? Caitlin Kraft Buchman, CEO and Founder at Women At The Table ?? Emma Ruttkamp-Bloem, Professor and Department Head at University of Pretoria , Chair of UNESCO's World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology, and member of the United Nations Secretary General's AI Advisory Body ?? Patrick Shortt, Sustainable Investing Associate at Fidelity International ?? Moderated by Lauren Compere, Managing Director, Boston Common AM It's not news to the #DigitalInclusion and #DigitalRights communities that we have to raise the bar for what we expect of companies developing and deploying AI. #GenAI is blurring the line between reality and fiction, hype and opportunity, true progress and corrosive decline. #facialrecognition and other high-risk uses of AI are entrenching themselves in even the most risk-averse regulatory systems. Navigating the regulatory labyrinth around AI in 2024 is nigh impossible without a suite of tools and an army of nimble legal experts. We don't know if we're at the dawn of a new era of progress or of an internet of ghosts. We don't know if AI will narrow the rift between the haves and the have-nots or expand it into an unbridgeable chasm. The second phase of our campaign will evolve to meet this fluid reality head-on. We've worked alongside Founding Co-leads Boston Common AM, Fidelity International, Women At The Table, incoming Co-lead Candriam, dozens of members of the campaign, and several external partners to assemble the building blocks. We are also strengthening the campaign's ties to the rich community of advocates around ethical and human rights-based AI. We're excited to show the international community what we have in store and how it can sharpen the lens of #corporateaccountability around AI. Join us on this new journey next Thursday! A year ago the Council on Ethics, together with a group of more than 30 institutional investors, launched the Big Tech and Human Rights collaborative engagement. This three-year initiative seeks to manage and mitigate systemic risks related to Big Tech companies’ human rights impacts, and to contribute to positive change and improved incorporation of human rights in the digital domain. The collaboration also aims to increase knowledge among investors and companies, in relation to risks, opportunities and best practice in a context of rapidly evolving technology, such as artificial intelligence.? Dialogues with companies focus on topics such as business models, corporate culture and structures, content-related issues, vulnerable groups (especially children), access to remedy and stakeholder engagement (including public policy engagement). The Council on Ethics has published a summary of activities and outcomes during 2023, which is now available on our website: https://lnkd.in/dJCWBdXb The engagement builds on work conducted by the Council on Ethics in this area since 2019, including the publication of a set of investor expectations together with the Danish Institute for Human Rights in 2020. https://lnkd.in/dSDxDEa Read more on our website: https://lnkd.in/dXaVDqBU #stewardship #activeownership #humanrights #bizhumanrights? ? Disruption or Advancement - Navigating Ethical Issues in the New Normal The world is evolving at an unprecedented pace. The relentless drive for progress and innovation has yielded transformative results, reshaping our interaction with society and the environment. As we stand on the brink of a new era, it's crucial to reflect on the ethical implications of our activities and investments. Are we paving the way for advancement, or are we heading towards blind disruption? Technological advancements have revolutionized every aspect of our lives. From artificial intelligence to biotechnology, the progress we've made is staggering. These innovations offer tremendous potential for improving our quality of life. However, they also raise significant ethical questions. For instance, AI can enhance efficiency and productivity, but it also poses risks to privacy and employment, meanwhile, AI will cause for more job opportunities. The balance between leveraging technology for good and safeguarding human values is delicate and demands careful consideration. Human activities have significantly impacted the planet. Industrialization, urbanization, and deforestation have led to environmental degradation and climate change. While these developments have driven economic growth, they have also caused irreversible damage to ecosystems. The ethical dilemma here revolves around sustainability. How do we continue to progress without compromising the health of our planet? The answer lies in adopting sustainable practices and investing in green technologies. Yeah, It's about finding harmony between development and environmental stewardship. Innovation drives progress, but it must be guided by ethical considerations. The development of new technologies should prioritize human welfare and dignity. For example, in the realm of biotechnology, advancements like genetic engineering hold promise for curing diseases. However, they also raise ethical questions about genetic modification and its long-term effects on humanity. As we advance in this new normal, it's imperative to embrace a paradigm that prioritizes ethical considerations in every facet of human activity. Progress should not come at the cost of our planet or societal well-being. By adopting sustainable practices, fostering inclusive development, and adhering to ethical principles, we can create a future that is both advanced and harmonious. The key lies in our collective commitment to making informed and responsible choices. The new normal is not just about disruption or advancement; it's about evolving with integrity and foresight. If it’s not sustainable it’s too much of a cost. To your continued innovation... Jesutomi Bamidele

The journey from accidental pioneer to founding the Social Responsibility Research Network (SRRNet), Prof. David Crowther. A distinguished expert in CSR and Sustainability. Curious how #AI factors into social responsibility? I recently had the pleasure of interviewing him, and we discussed the following topics: ?? How he accidentally became a pioneer ?? How can AI be a force for good, and avoid the pitfalls of energy consumption and ethical dilemmas? ?? Do we need external regulations, or can we act socially responsible on our own? ?? Is there a universal code of ethics, or is it subjective? (I found this part interesting) ?? Let's face it, AI isn't surpassing human intelligence anytime soon. ?? And the pandemic? It highlighted just how much (or how little) technology can truly support education. ?? ANNOUNCEMENT: The good news is, Prof David Crowther will be visiting Egypt in a conference from 4-7 September! And the system is now open for submissions All submission details and deadlines can be found on the website ?? ?? https://lnkd.in/dUW5TFPb ??
