On this day in 1982, the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held its first meeting, ultimately honoring August 9th to commemorate the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. This day is significant as it recognizes the rights and contributions of indigenous peoples worldwide. This year focuses on 'Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact.' On Indigenous Peoples' Day, one of the most important things we can do is to learn about the treaty relationships that exist between the US federal government and Native Tribes. These relationships are complex, but we need to understand how they have shaped our laws and culture. The Department of Home Affairs has released a discussion paper: Supporting strong and sustainable regions, Review of Regional Migration Settings Discussion Paper. The discussion paper proposes five key objectives for regional migration, with a focus to align these with the national objectives of the migration system as outlined in the Migration Strategy.
