"There’s trust needed between board and staff, between staff and grantees, and also among our colleagues in the field. Those ecosystems of trust form a strong network that allow us to move nimbly and make impact happen when it’s needed." -Philip Li, ROBERT STERLING CLARK FOUNDATION, INC. Applications just opened for the next cohort of the Early Career Piton Fellows! If you know an early career leader consider nominating them or if you are an early career leader consider applying! #changingthefaceofDenverleadership
The Women's Foundation of Colorado's Programs Manager Crystal Ayala-Goldstein is doing groundbreaking work in the cash assistance space, and we're proud to call her a Piton Fellow. Through their WINcome grantmaking strategy, Crystal and WFCO have invested more than $1M in 17 different community organizations working to disperse vital cash assistance to women and their families throughout Colorado. In just the second year of the program, Crystal and her team are already dispelling myths that cash assistance is too often spent in frivolous ways. According to WINcome's Year 2 Evaluation report, far and away the most frequent costs that cash assistance funds from the program helped cover were related to housing, transportation, home expenses, clothing, food and healthcare needs. Crystal has now been asked to report out on the success of WINcome to everyone from Colorado Public Radio to Denver7 (KMGH-TV) to CBS to Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO), and we're excited to be in her orbit as she continues to move this work forward. Are you an early career Metro Denver leader like Crystal with approximately 2-5 years of experience? Interested in harnessing your voice and deepening your understanding about some of the biggest issues facing leaders in our city? Interested in building social capital alongside a network of peers deeply committed to advancing justice, racial equity and inclusion? Know someone who might be? We're now accepting applications and nominations for the Piton Fellowship's Early Career Cohort through July 21! "In case you missed it.?Dr. Laura Dresser, the keynote at the recent Women’s Fund Spring Luncheon, spoke brilliantly of the movement of women into the workforce over the last few decades, with Wisconsin having one of the highest percentages of women in the labor market.?She describes how the shift of women working outside the home, expanded the “care economy," including child care, elder care and other service/support sectors.?The lack of public investment in these however, has resulted in further inequities for women, who may represent the majority of these workers.?The participation rate for women in Wisconsin’s workforce is dropping as many have no choice but to assume greater shares of care work for their families.?So many in the audience truly connected with the issues she described.?Follow more from Dr. Dresser at High Road Strategy -?https://highroad.wisc.edu.?The Women’s Fund current funding priorities include access to child care, behavioral health and financial security for women- all intertwined in the elements of Dr. Dresser’s work.?Follow the Fund @?cfcwi.org?Women’s Fund.

Did you know that 80% of our Chicago Scholars Alumni return to Illinois after graduation? That means serious growth, change, and investment back into our communities, and a future for the City of Chicago that reflects the experiences of our students. Additionally, 4 in 5 of our Scholars are Black, Latinx, or Indigenous - some of the communities that receive the least amount of investment and resources. Through our work, our Scholars are making huge strides to change that - returning to their neighborhoods to set up nonprofits, becoming medial practitioners, and more. Want to learn more? Discovering the Heartbeat of Successful Community Outreach Have you ever wondered what truly makes community outreach programs succeed? ?? It's not just about organizing events or raising funds. The real secret lies in understanding and connecting with the community at its core. ?? During my journey in event marketing and community leadership, I've learned that listening is more powerful than speaking. Tailoring programs to meet the specific needs and desires of the community not only fosters engagement but also builds lasting relationships. ?? Success comes from creating spaces where voices are heard, contributions are valued, and everyone has a sense of belonging. In essence, effective community outreach is rooted in empathy, flexibility, and a genuine commitment to service. As we plan our next initiatives, let's focus on being catalysts for positive change by putting people first. After all, it's the connections we forge that drive real impact.

Poli Sci folks: I have been asked to do a "practitioners roundtable" at APSA to highlight political scientists working outside of academia as part of their career diversification program. I would love to do some shoutouts so please message me if you know of any fellow political scientists working in nonprofit/policy spaces. (Also doing a roundtable on Idea of Fraternity in America for new readers).

Nonprofits need board members, y'all. I'm serious - it's one of the top needs I hear when I meet with our nonprofit members. You don't need deep pockets or specialized skills to be an effective board member. You need a few hours a month, passion for the cause, and the ability to work with others to accomplish goals. If you want training, I Live Here I Give Here hosts a robust full day training event every fall, and Mission Capital hosts more frequent board essentials training. What are some of the benefits you might get through board service? Networking, new friends, a sense of accomplishment, giving back to your community, learning new professional skills, boosting your resume, spending time doing something you enjoy...did I miss anything?
Back by popular demand, we have updated our Open Board Position list for Summer 2024. Dozens of nonprofits across Austin and Central Texas are currently looking for volunteers to fill open board positions. We’ve compiled a list of more than 60 openings so you can start giving back fast! Find the PDF list here: https://bit.ly/3QNpEIr
