When was the last time you thought about your neighborhood’s third spaces? These are places where neighbors come together outside of home and work. These places can include: ??Coffee shops or other local businesses ??Houses of worship ??Community centers ??Parks ??Nonprofit and civic institutions These are the places where neighbors create social cohesion – where they bond, chat, or just relax together. Noticing these places (and their health) is an important part of partnering with neighbors to reweave the fabric of place. "During the pandemic, the rise in remote work created an influx of residents from large urban centres keen to take advantage of Haliburton County’s housing prices, which are still lower than in places like Toronto. The economic gap between the year-round residents and the seasonal visitors increased and with it, the area’s affordable housing challenges. As an organization we create a Diversity Calendar each year in accordance with a selected theme. This year’s theme focuses on highlighting nonprofits in the area that align with our Triple Bottom Line— People, Planet, and Profit. In March, we have chosen to highlight ICCF Community Homes. Inner City Christian Federation (ICCF) Community Homes is the oldest nonprofit affordable housing provider in Michigan. They’ve been active in the Grand Rapids area since 1974 and engage 2,000+ households each year with housing-related services. They manage over 600 units of affordable rental housing and provide homeownership education and home purchase opportunities to hundreds of neighbors. All people deserve safe, affordable housing. ICCF Community Homes seeks housing justice in West Michigan for a more equitable and thriving community. VISION: Vibrant communities in West Michigan with connected neighbors, housing justice, and abundant opportunity. MISSION: Equitable opportunity, affordable homes, and thriving neighborhoods. VALUES: Respect, treating all people with dignity; Opportunity, empowering our neighbors to use their innate gifts; Beauty, constructing sustainable, beautiful homes. HISTORY: ICCF began with a single donation of a home to a church in 1974. A group of volunteers decided to renovate the house and sell it to a low-income family. Decades later, the scope of their work has increased significantly, but the heart remains the same. ICCF believes that all people deserve safe, affordable housing—and that stable housing is essential to foster a thriving community.

A new survey shows that almost 80% of our state's nonprofits could be in financial trouble within a year - an alarming increase from 50% in 2022. Nonprofits are still rebuilding from COVID and economic factors are causing more people to seek help from social service organizations. Nonprofits rely heavily on philanthropic support and support is dwindling which can lead to programs being cut, staff being let go and nonprofits merging just to continue their work. https://lnkd.in/gKAsArer
