Just in time for the New Year — a new recommendations reset for Instagram! This new feature, which will roll out soon, lets you start fresh by allowing you to clear your recommended content across Explore, Reels and Feed. I’m especially excited to see how teens use this new feature — we know their passions and interests are ever-changing and this helps ensure they are engaging with content that’s relevant, makes them feel good, and is age-appropriate. https://lnkd.in/e5fqWQSa
It is great to have the reset feature but what would be even better is to not force feed the content related to the last video i saw (which also i don't know why i saw). Stumbled upon exotic fruits video - that is it, now i have to see all kinds of plants and fruits that grow across Arctic to Antarctica. Stumbled upon a weird conspiracy theory, now lets go banana's feeding all kinds of conspiracy theory videos. It happens time and again and makes the experience extremely disassociated with realistic likes. I would probably be resetting all the time.
This feature is definitely welcome and there is clearly an excellent use case for young people, particularly as their interests change. However its success will depend on how it is deployed and what happens after the reset. For example, there is a big difference between being pushed with ads promoting a certain body image Vs content that might improve teens own sense of worth. Progress is an outcome where the algorithm ceases to push content to young people that is not age-appropriate (or in the worst cases, harmful). Teen members using luna tell us that they want content that they can learn from, which reflects their values and interests, without treating them solely as consumers. Interested to see where this goes and keen to connect with anyone working with teens, digital health and online safety!
I love this idea sooooooo much and wish we could do it on all social media channels!
Thanks for sharing this, Nicola! Great to see Meta taking such a thoughtful approach to promoting a positive experience for teens that fosters beneficial connection and information-sharing. Prioritizing young users' well-being while recognizing the dynamic nature of their interests is an important step forward. As someone deeply interested in the intersection of public policy, technology, and business, I find this a compelling example of how innovative companies can address challenges online. I’m excited to see how cross-sector collaboration can continue to shape solutions that enhance safety and empower users in meaningful ways.
What they need to do is make my timeline in chronological order again because I am TIRED of seeing the same 3 people on my TL and the rest are adds or influencers who I find very much irritating.
The opportunity for young users to rebuild their digital identities and express themselves in new ways seems promising. However, this feature might be exploited by users attempting to manipulate algorithms or by groups aiming to reduce the platform's advertising revenues. Therefore, it is essential to carefully assess its advantages and disadvantages.

3 个月Ah, Instagram, the benevolent overlord of social media, is now offering us the chance to hit “refresh” on our digital personalities—because who among us hasn’t craved a clean slate after one too many guilty-pleasure cat videos or algorithm-induced spirals into niche conspiracy theories? But let’s be real: this “fresh start” feature is less about helping teens rediscover themselves and more about sidestepping the growing chorus of online safety advocates wagging their fingers. Resetting the algorithm sounds great on paper, but isn’t it like sweeping crumbs under the rug while the house is still on fire? And don’t forget the timing: right after default, Teen Accounts and a glowing explainer on their safety efforts. Coincidence? Hardly. It’s almost like Instagram is doing the bare minimum to dodge scrutiny while quietly muttering, “See? We care!” Sure, the algorithm reset might give teens a momentary reprieve from hyper-curated chaos, but will it address the deeper issues, like how these platforms are designed to hook young minds in the first place? Probably not. But hey, at least we can all pretend we’re not ruled by our search history for a little while longer. Baby steps, right?
