After a long and tedious visa application process, my second European experience, after 22 long years, began on May 24, 2024. The trip included two days of conferences and one day of social activities in Milan. The conference was for BKR members from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, but the program are still relevant to all participants including those coming from other BKR regions like Alas Oplas. Overall, the short talks and discussions I had with some of the participants like Plamena Nikolova from Cyrpus, among others, led me to a realization that no matter where you are in the world, management and business owners face challenges brought about by the changing workforce. Leaders are then called to be more proactive, flexible, and reflective, creating a workspace that promotes bonds, harmony, consensus, and participation. There were many insights shared by three notable speakers invited, but I would like to highlight what Michael Burch, CEO of BKR International, said at the beginning of the four-day event. He mentioned three key items: Technology, Practice Management, and Increased HR Capacity. The third item got me more interested to take part in this conference as this resonates with my role at AOC. In totality, all three are directly related. When we focus on practice management, it is inevitable for us to integrate new technologies. These technologies can only be maximized if we increase the capacity of our employees through continuous training and development. It calls for more value-adding interventions for HR. Beyond the technical side of the conference, there were many other things I am excited to share. This EMEA conference experience is a testimony that when AOC management decides to give an opportunity like this, it is not always just about technical development, but they also consider the holistic well-being of the participants. For me, this was very special because it became an opportunity for us, as a family, to reconnect, especially for my parents. I will always be grateful to our bosses, especially our CEO Marycris Oplas with the support of our Chairman Donnies Alas, for thinking of my attendance at this conference. Just like my experience in the US, when I was given another memorable opportunity in Kansas, there were invitations from Filipino friends to just stay and take that Euro earning opportunity. But I told them, I have a moral obligation to Alas Oplas & Co., CPAs and my team. A big kudos to the people behind this conference especially Emma Barry and Iulia Lascau. One of the speakers mentioned an original quote from John Dewey during the conference: “We do not learn from experience; we learn from reflecting on these experiences.” To conclude, I will remain reflective of this opportunity as I continue my journey at AOC.

"You will never be an accountant!" I remember these words like yesterday. I was having a meeting with my line management, talking about career advancement opportunities. I was still very much green at the time, inexperienced and making lots of mistakes. I owned up to my mistakes because as an aspiring finance professional at the time, there are certain values you are expected to have. I term it PHARIOT: Professionalism, Honesty, Accountability, Respect, Integrity, Objectivity and Trust. What I wasn't prepared for were these words - which were quite harsh. But words of others, don't define me. Only what God says - matters. "You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you." "For I have not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and of a sound mind". "Though the righteous man fall seven times, he gets back up". "If God be for, who can be against you?" CIMA and the AICPA awarded me this designation, but God gave it to me. To God be all the glory and honor that people's words never broke me, but served as fuel for the journey.
