Big Budgets Don’t Make the Magic, Heartfelt Ideas Do Yesterday, I shared the wonderful teaser for the latest John Lewis Christmas advert. It’s a showcase of what a big marketing budget can achieve ??? But here’s the thing— You don’t need a massive budget to create an unforgettable Christmas ad. Take, for example, the advert from Charlie’s Bar in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland with a messages about “mental health”, “loneliness” and “aging”— we can connect with. It was made on a budget of just £700… and it went viral, touching hearts far and wide ?? The pub’s manager said the response was “beyond her wildest dreams”—a testament to the power of genuine storytelling. It just goes to show… Sometimes, it’s not about the money. It’s about authenticity, connection and a heartfelt idea. Put your best creative minds on every campaign whether the budget’s big or small. Mostly for myself...to remind me how ugly greedy looks when a partner, client, or associate clamors for power, recognition or money when structuring a deal or project. It's not a good look. I had two conference calls yesterday with numerous executives where, by the end of the discussion, I concluded the deals were going nowhere. Why? Simply due to the insecurities of the teams who were clearly worried, needlessly, that they might lose power or money. Don't be that guy. ### NOT LONG AGO I MET WITH A COMPANY THAT SPECIALIZES IN DIGITAL APPS FOR ENTERTAINERS... Their client roster reads like a Who’s Who of recording artists: Usher, Sara Bareilles, the Eagles, Smashing Pumpkins, Kelly Clarkson and others. Their work is very good, exceptional in fact when you realize the team has deftly cornered the market on high-dollar app development projects, not from LA or New York—but a dingy basement in Bremerton, Washington. They're young and lucky and they know it. When we started talking about combining our talents in a “unite-and conquer” partnership to further dominate the entertainment app development space their excitement was palpable. But the minute we started talking money—about who gets paid for what in a series of hypothetical scenarios—their eyes got shifty, their words tightly measured and their vibe cagey.
