Ever feel like your DMs are full of small talk… but no sales? You’re not alone. Most biz owners struggle with one big mistake. Not knowing how to pivot from casual chat to business. They either: ? Stay stuck in small talk and never shift to business. ? Go straight to pitching and get ignored. The fix? A smooth transition. I call it the SEGWAY. ? Acknowledge the convo: “Excellent you're.... [personal news/commonality].” ? Shift naturally: “How are you finding X? [their business/problem area]?” ? Keep it light, not salesy: “I hear this a lot. Mind if I share how others handle it?” This makes the shift feel natural. So they want to keep talking. I’ve booked 1000s of calls using this simple DM strategy. Breaking it all down in this OpusClip. Watch and apply.
Where do you get stuck in DMs, staying in small talk too long or going business too soon? What’s your go-to way to pivot a conversation from casual chat to business? Have you ever lost a potential client because the conversation didn’t move forward? What happened?
Starting conversations is easy. But turning them into business opportunities without killing the vibe? That’s the real skill. Because here’s the thing - go too casual, and nothing happens. Go too pushy, and you break trust before you even get to the offer. In my experience, the best sales don’t come from awkward pitches or forced transitions. They come from organic conversations where the shift to business feels natural, not like a sales ambush.
Great wisdom here as always, Charlotte Lloyd? Transitioning from small talk to business can be tricky and awkward.? What strategies have you found most effective in keeping the conversation engaging without coming off too strong??
If you go for the pitch too soon you come across as desperate or too salesy. Thank you Charlotte
Start a conversation. Ask questions that move it along. Don't pitch your product or idea.
Solid advice! Too many people either linger in the friend zone or go straight for the hard sell, both are conversation killers. The SEGWAY approach is smart because it makes the transition feel natural instead of forced. I’d add that curiosity is key, asking thoughtful questions about their challenges makes them want to keep engaging.
the shift is key as it ensures we don't stay stuck in loop of causal talk Charlotte Lloyd.
