Would you put a bag of dog poop at the curb of your own home……and what does that have to do with recruiting top performers? Walking in my neighborhood last week I came across this sign in front of a neighbor’s home. My neighbor went dumpster diving to retrieve a bag of dog poop from their own trash can. They then placed it on their own sidewalk with a sign, aiming to shame the culprit who left it in their trash can. Sure, it's frustrating when someone uses your trash can for their dog's waste. But is dumpster diving and public shaming really the smart move? Especially when you put it on the curb of your own home? My father always says you may be right but are you sure you’re wise? Now, let’s talk hiring. I had a client who offered a candidate a job with a verbally agreed unusual term. Legal investigated, found it unconventional, and changed the official offer without telling anyone before sending the official offer letter. The candidate was surprised and pushed back, leading to two weeks of negotiations. Despite eventually reverting to the original term in the formal offer letter, the candidate declined. Was the company right to investigate? Probably. Was it wise to change the offer after a verbal agreement? Absolutely not. Just like the homeowner was right to be upset, but unwise to handle it by public shaming….and cluttering their own yard in the process This job market is tricky. It's more of an employer's market, but that doesn't mean you can treat candidates poorly. Your reputation is on the line. Every decision, every negotiation, every offer matters. Be wise. Be respectful. And win the right talent.

I have lately seen many people hiring for positions of "officers." What is disturbing to me is on the part of qualifications; they want someone who has served for at least 5 years in the same role (as an officer). My question is, when will these people grow? After 5 years, this person should be serving as a senior officer, an assistant manager, or even a manager, but you want them to still serve as officers. The same applies to other roles. If you are looking for a manager, consider officers who have some good years of experience, not a manager who has served in the same role for the past 10 years. This person should be looking forward to being a regional manager or a director. Copied Rashid Mutali

Every year, we notice an increase in crew turnover mid-season. ?? What do you think is the core of the issue? 1. Crew can't take the pressure? ?? 2. Owner expectations too high? ??? 3. Captain's crew management skills need improvement? ?? Longevity is still the most important asset crew can have on their CV. ?? However, the good news if you still haven't found a job, is that a new job might be opening soon, so be ready to seize the opportunity and hang on when you’re there. ?? If you have a good crew profile on Seazone and you log in frequently, you will get called on. ?? For the hiring captains out there - Good crew is out there looking for their chance to shine. ? Log in to Seazone and put a job offer on the system. #YachtingLife #CrewManagement #Seazone #YachtCrew #MarineJobs #CaptainLife #YachtOwner #JobOpportunity #YachtLife #SailingCareers

A very experienced Superyacht Captain with 15+ years of experience recently missed out on an interview with their dream role. The reason? Their CV didn’t tell the full story. On paper, they had it all—strong technical skills, solid leadership experience, great longevity. But here’s the thing: the family office wasn’t just looking for technical expertise. They wanted someone who could demonstrate how they create unforgettable guest experiences. The Captain thought, “It’s obvious I can deliver exceptional guest experiences,” but their CV didn’t showcase this at all. It's a common mistake I see on Captain's CVs. Meanwhile, a less qualified candidate did showcase those things, got an interview—and landed the job. ?? CV Tip No. 1: Bring your story to life. Add detail! Highlight your knowledge of exclusive destinations and how you’ve gone the extra mile to deliver exceptional experiences. If you’re a Captain with a wealth of experience and are unsure how to make your CV stand out, let’s chat. My DMs are always open. PS if you work in a family office and want your CV reviewed, just give me a shout. #superyachtcrew #superyachtcaptains #yachtinglife #yachtingcareers #crewrecruitment

Maximize your Crew Hiring - Effective Reference Checks As a yacht captain or head of department, hiring the right crew is important. Here are some strategies to ensure your reference checks are thorough: 1. Verify Details: Confirm the candidate’s job title, responsibilities, and duration of employment. (I can't even begin to tell you how many crew add on extra time to their CV.) 2. Speak to Multiple References: Get a well-rounded view by contacting several references, including HOD and colleagues. (Don't go with only one. One reference is not a clear indicator. In the past, I have had one reference tell me how horrible the candidate was, but when I checked out the other 4, they were singing the candidate's praises. One bad reference could mean they have a personal conflict with the person.) 3. Ask Open-Ended Questions: Encourage detailed responses to gain deeper insights. (When it's just yes/no, you can't really get a good feel.) 4. Prepare Questions in Advance: Focus them on the performance, reliability, and teamwork of the candidate. (Final question: Would you work with or hire them again?) #YachtCrew #CrewRecruitment #ReferenceChecks #YachtLife #Leadership #HiringTips #Maritime #YachtingIndustry #YachtManagement #CrewManagement #Recruitment #YachtCaptain #YachtJobs

GUIDED RIGHT ? When this candidate was first presented with the opportunity, he was hesitant to commit due to a potential offer from another yacht—a common consideration for experienced crew members navigating the job market. While keeping your options open is important, I often remind candidates that until an interview is conducted or a formal offer is made, other opportunities remain uncertain. Recognising a great opportunity in front of you is key to avoiding missed chances, and my promise to any crew member is to help identify which opportunities will benefit you the most. In this case, I advised the candidate to accept the position, confident it would provide an ideal platform for his professional growth. The role aligned perfectly with his goals, and I knew the team dynamics and leadership onboard would create an environment where he could thrive. It’s rewarding to see this decision pay off, with the candidate now excelling in a role he enjoys, surrounded by a supportive crew and leadership. My ultimate goal is not simply filling positions but fostering long-term success through well-matched placements, and I’m pleased this approach has resulted in another successful outcome ???? One of the most common things I hear from those new to the industry is, “It’s taken longer than I thought to land my first flight.” There’s a misconception that once you complete your safety training, you’ll quickly secure your first flight. The reality is that safety training is just the beginning. I often say that you could have the best training in the world and still struggle to land your first flight. Is some of it luck? Sure, being in the right place at the right time and connecting with the right person can play a role. But it’s also about the consistency of your networking efforts. People get discouraged because they visit FBOs once or twice, attend one event, and then wonder why they haven’t been called for a flight. This frustration can affect their demeanor and attitude, leading them to give up. ??I spoke to a friend who recently landed her first flight after almost a year of trying. I reminded her that while she had been working towards it for a year, it was only in the last 4-5 months that she truly put herself out there, treating networking and job hunting as a full-time job. She attended every event she could and even organized her own event. Her consistency paid off. I also encourage you to get very honest with yourself about your efforts, your portfolio, and what energy you’re giving off in those interactions. Everyone wants to be a flight attendant, but not everyone is willing to put in the effort to land the job. Let’s work together over 4 weeks, or individual 1:1 sessions to get you where you need to go! DM me and let’s chat!
