I am honored to share that the Neill-Cochran House Museum is the recipient of two awards, the Stewardship Award and the Preservation Award for Restoration, for Reckoning with the Past, the restoration of Austin's last intact slave dwelling, as a part of Preservation Austin's 2024 Preservation Merit Awards! This project was made possible by the tireless efforts of Dr. Rowena Dasch of the Neill-Cochran House Museum, Dr. Tara Dudley from the University of Texas,?and my Fermata team (including Maja Smith of MajaDesign and iZone). This award is a testament to the dedication and commitment of this amazing group of professionals of which I was honored to be a participant. The?9/11?Memorial Museum preserves an essential moment in our history for future generations, ensuring that we will never forget. As someone in the adjacent archives sector, I am looking forward to today's Museums Association event: All Inclusive: Championing Accessible Museums "Ableism – prioritising the needs of non-disabled people over disabled people – remains pervasive across the museum sector. Disabled people still face barriers in our buildings, policies and structures, and are chronically unrepresented in our workforce and collections. All Inclusive is our annual one-day conference exploring how museums can become anti-ableist in everything that they do. Anti-ableism recognises abled privilege and actively looks to challenge and dismantle it through theory, actions and practices."??

We had hundreds of people play the Treasure Hunt the first weekend of may. It was great how fast some people solved clues and got to the locations. Sometimes in less than 10 minutes. We also had a blast partnering with MoMa to bring people into the museum for free museum day. It feels good to do good in your community and meet so many interesting people. Next up: a hotline for citizens to give wisdom to one another.

My answer to the second question in the slide below actually sparked a great convo earlier with my colleague Tamar Keenan about how outdated the term "career ladder" is. It makes careers seem so rigid and pre-determined. We don't have to always climb up to progress. It leaves unrealistic expectations and narrows what growth actually means. What should we be saying instead of "career ladder"? Perhaps, we should be calling it "career maps" instead, since there are many different career destinations to consider and pathways to reaching them that are equally as satisfying. This also includes taking the rocket ship up to space (senior management/c-level), which is certainly a destination, but not the only way to grow. I could go on and on, but I'll stop here. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Dear Siblings in The Struggle against The System, We now know that the next decade, 2025 to 2034, will be a decade of challenges—of a magnitude greater than any, perhaps, than the present generation has ever faced. Rising to these challenges will mean—at the very least—reimagining the stories our society has, up until this point, untruthfully told us about how we got free—if indeed we got free... This is why I have agreed to share conversation with the curator of the International Slavery Museum, about how museums, specifically, and in fact all members of our society, co-productively, might reimagine histories and reconstruct solidarities that, strategically, equip us for the challenges of the daunting decade ahead—a decade during which the very freedom our forebears fought for is very likely to be at stake.
