After losing her beloved Mema to breast cancer, Kara decided to do a self-breast exam in the shower—and that’s when she found a suspicious lump near her armpit. At just 26, her doctor told her she was “too young to worry.” But Kara trusted her instincts and pushed for further tests. In December 2008, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She faced a double mastectomy, eight rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and fertility treatments. It was a long and difficult road, but Kara made a promise to herself: she would go through it by Fighting Pretty—with a smile on her face, lipstick on her lips, and strength in her heart. ???? Kara’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection and self-advocacy. No matter your age, trust your gut, do those self-exams, and if something feels wrong, fight for answers. What’s the ￡ cost of having a poorly child? This week we have had 3 nights in hospital. We are back for at least another 3 nights. So what’s the cost to parents staying a week? Parking - ￡8.50pd Food for 2 - ￡15 per meal per day (subsidised hospital food) Drinks and snacks - ￡10 per day minimum Assuming a 7 day stay, you are looking at a minimum of ￡235. A male child with Leukamia is treated for 3 years. In that time they can have a significant amount of time in hospital. The average additional monthly cost to a family is ￡700 per month. This doesn’t take into account loss of income, and is in no way covered by the governments Disability Living Allowance. It lands families in debt and even leaves some families missing treatment as they simply can’t afford to go. Young Lives vs Cancer have a campaign #runningonempty going to Downing Street. For my first official week of Movemeber, I want to dive into an important topic, prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men worldwide. Currently, around 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives. This statistic highlights how vital it is for men to be proactive about their health, especially when it comes to early detection and screening. Prostate cancer often develops slowly, and symptoms may not appear until the later stages. Regular screenings can catch it early when treatment is most effective. Men over 50, or those with a family history, should especially consider talking to their doctors about screening options. For men with a higher risk, it’s often recommended to start screenings even earlier. Screening saves lives. By being aware and proactive, we can help reduce the impact of this disease on men and their families. This Movember, let’s remind the men in our lives to make their health a priority and schedule regular check-ups. Hope everyone had a good Christmas and caught up with a few friends. Trojan Wellbeing were busy providing support for those requiring a chat or even face to face catch ups. Christmas Do for the Maidstone Coffee Club Met two South Wales Police colleagues, one having been dismissed and another facing a GM Hearing starting 6th Jan. Just a gentle reminder, support is available. Our membership now stands at 34, which is fantastic and helping us to build our fighting fund. It would be fantastic to hit 50 before the end of 2024 ?? We have sponsored a Workshop in South Wales, rescheduled date TBC (Storm Darragh disrupted the last one) Also funded an Anxiety Busting Workshop with Rik Stevens Mentally Healthier, will be looking at running another one in the next few weeks. Trojan Wellbeing are still supporting our Kent Police colleague Jazz-Anne Fletcher who is undergoing horrendous Cancer Treatment.
