It is Bees’ Needs Week 2024 : 8 to 14 July 2024 ???? Bees’ Needs Week is an annual event coordinated by Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), working alongside a host of organisations such as conservation groups, businesses, and charities. The aim of the week is to raise awareness of the importance of #pollinators, and share ideas, actions and activities that highlight the ways in which everyone can help #bees and other pollinators to thrive. There are 5 simple actions that anyone can take to help pollinators: 1. Grow more #Nectar rich flowers, shrubs and trees. Using window or balcony boxes are good options if you don’t have a garden. 2. Let patches of garden and land grow wild. 3. Cut grass less often. 4. Do not disturb insect nests and hibernation spots. 5. Though I rarely post on Linkedin, I am here regularly, absorbing the insights of those I admire. I post now because The Ag Community in Vermont needs more from the companies, individuals, and associations who work here or have visited, benefitted, or simply appreciate Vermont values. We need folks to come to the aid of damaged Vermont’s farms. The catastrophic storms of 2023 and 'wrong' weather throughout the winter into spring this year caused and continues to cause more than $45 million in losses to Vermont family farms. The devastation done to these farms is largely invisible - crops lost, infrastructure damaged or destroyed, and seasons of set-backs.? With ongoing, all-volunteer help from partners and supporters listed below, we're hoping to raise as much cash as we can to help offset the profound losses Vermont farmers have experienced. Recently, fires have engulfed farms in Gauteng and Limpopo, turning lives upside down. Veld that once provided food, grazing land, and livelihoods has become nothing but charred wastelands. Flames have torn through farms, leaving nothing but ash and devastation in their wake. For our wildlife ranchers, the destruction is unimaginable. Livestock left without food, and wildlife habitats obliterated. Families and workers are left standing amidst the ruins of their homes and businesses, unsure of how to begin rebuilding. Imagine waking up to this devastation, with nothing but the clothes on your back, wondering how you’ll feed your children, your employees, or the animals that depend on you. As March is B Corp month we wanted to share an update on Meadow Mission, an initiative that was born out of?the accreditation process. Since 2021 we've donated?2% of turnover?to create wildflower meadows, a vital habitat for bees with our charity partner Plantlife International. To date, with our customers help, we’ve planted?over 20 acres! We've lost 98% of our wildflower meadows since the 1940's which is a vital habitat for honey bees as well as many other invertebrates, mammals, bats, and birds. Meadows also store carbon. There is some research suggesting that a flower-full meadow can store 30% more carbon than a flower-less meadow. Companies can use veritree's platform to monitor and tell the story of their investment in Nature-based Solutions to the climate crisis. Unwrapit is proud to offer trees planted through veritree as a gift option. In the past year, gift recipients sent a gift through Unwrapit have chosen this option as their preferred gift. According to our live dashboard, 7,285 trees is enough to fill 356 studio apartments full of trees, remove 877 cars from the road for one year, and provide 21.7 work days to local tree planters. While Veritree itself is not a nonprofit or charity itself, they have pioneered what it looks like for a social purpose business to accelerate the work of nonprofits and charities on the ground. In this case, that work is focused on tree planting and ocean restoration. This impacts farmers, reducing yields, increasing pests, and raising costs. We can help by promoting soil testing, using biofertilizers, and supporting soil conservation efforts. Each of my amazing kids tends to 3 Hydro Coops, while Lize Marie leads the charge with an impressive 6 Coops. Together, they're making a profound impact on both our local community and the agricultural landscape. ???? ???? In just six weeks, our family farm produces a staggering 2250 broiler chickens, securing a profit exceeding R140,000. But our mission goes beyond profits; it's about giving back. Every month, we're honored to donate over 6000 eggs and more than 5000 fresh vegetables to support local communities in need. ???? Through Hydro Coops, we've not only found a sustainable source of income but also a platform for meaningful contribution. Our children are learning invaluable lessons in entrepreneurship, responsibility, and the joy of giving back. Together, we're proving that even the smallest efforts can make a big difference. ????
